(Me again! We're really struggling with this upcoming baby's name! Thanks in advance!)
What does the name Julius bring to mind? We prefer it to Julian as it's less common and feels a bit stronger to me.

It sounds pretentious to me. Along the same line as Atticus.

Everleigh13 · 17/03/2026 17:00

It makes me think of Julius Caesar. There is a Julius at my daughter’s nursery. I haven’t heard his name being shortened. I think the name is fine. I prefer it to Julian, which I really don’t like.

Bellybellas · 17/03/2026 17:09

I like it!

I’ve not met a Julius so don’t have any associations. Your Julius will become his name!

The one I know has been called Jude for over 60 years. Not a pretentious guy though, quite the opposite.

Oh, interesting! Jude as a nickname for Julius? I hadn't even considered that!

Depending on your age, I think of Arnold Schwarzeneggers character from the film Twins, but I'm in my 40s, I guess the younger generations won't make the connection. That aside I'm not really keen on the name but then it's not my dc so each to their own.

Came on to say this too. I’m late 30s.

user1476613140 · 17/03/2026 17:46

Caesar.

LilyLemonade · 17/03/2026 19:08

I like it, I think it sounds quite European.
It's a solid and very easy name to say and write yet not very common.

Calliopespa · 17/03/2026 19:09

I quite like it.

Obviously it has Caesar connotations, and somehow Augustus seems a bit less pompous because the name has been used more, whereas Julian tends to have been used instead of Julius.

BUT I like it, it is strong and unusual without being yoonique, and I prefer it to Jude, which brings to mind all the lugubrious misery of Hardy, Jules which is just ... ick, and Julian, which is nice enough, but does slightly conjure up for me a man who fastidiously irons his underpants.

I think, with a bit of a swagger, he could pull off Julius nicely.

Hey Juuuude, don't be a fool...

I don't think it flows naturally as a nn and I actually don't like it.

I get the whole Jude Law thing, but he is actually getting to be quite an old man now, and to me it is a 60-something female librarian who feels Judith sounds a bit stiff and Jude hints nicely at her wild side (which is occasionally go to the chipped on Friday night wearing no underpants under her tweed skirt.

Holdonforsummer · 17/03/2026 19:14

It’s pompous and old fashioned for me too, I’m afraid.

jay55 · 17/03/2026 19:21

I find Julian wet.
i grew up with a Julius who was seen as glamorous as he was in a film. Hadn’t ever associated him with Caesar, probably as he was black.

MiaKulper · 17/03/2026 19:51

I quite like it but I don't like Julian.
Cassius is better. Do you like that?

xOlive · 17/03/2026 19:58

Ooo lar dee dar, fancy pants Magee. Posh, pompous, pretentious. Sorry. And that’s for both Julius and Julian.
Jude is nice.
What other names do you like but have crossed off the list… and why?

IwanttoWFH · 17/03/2026 20:11

Reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Twins”. I love Arnie so it’s a hit with me!

canuckup · 17/03/2026 20:37

Pretentious

Sorry: occasionally going to the chip shop.

But you get the idea. It's a slightly lame attempt to loosen up a rather prim ladies name to me.

Or it's Jude the Obscure, who always makes me feel a bit ground down by the world.

This 100% even ahead of Caesar - i can hear him saying it with the accent now.

Hoplittlesbunnieshophophop · 17/03/2026 21:52

Wet blanket - sorry!

TremendousThirst · 17/03/2026 22:07

Reminds me of the baby in the lovely children’s book, “Julius, the Baby of the World”. I like it!

PurpleFlower1983 · 17/03/2026 22:14

Definitely Caesar.

lastminuteasusualdotcom · 17/03/2026 22:16

I know the lovliest Julius, can't say enough nice things about him (just as a counter point to all the "arrogant" / "pompous" comments previously). He's Swedish, perhaps a more common name there. It's a big name for a small kid I guess but people end up settling into their names don't they? My only exception to this is people who name their kids random words rather than proper names like Apple Martin.

My only advise about naming kids is make sure you like it. I really don't like my youngest child's name, it was a panic pick and I'm still annoyed 4 and a half years later.

Giraffehaver · 17/03/2026 22:17

I prefer the sound of Cassius but not the meaning. Julius doesn't sound strong to me. It sounds a bit wet

Newgirls · 17/03/2026 22:31

it’s quite similar sounding to Julie? That’s what popped into my head

SophiaSW1 · 17/03/2026 22:41

Poncey
