What do you think of Hero?

My sister in law has just had a baby girl and has called her Hero. I am delighted for her of course but I just can't get my head around her name. What do you think?

Personally I was rather pleased when my MIL hated DDs name. It confirmed the fact that we have completely different taste (mine is better natch )

lots of pit bulls around here are called hero.

Beautiful. Reminds me of Much Ado about Nothing, although for a role model, I much prefer her fiesty cousin Beatrice. Hero was a bit drippy.

Did you see the Guardian last Saturday? On the back page of the Family section, someone was writing about going potholing with their children Hero and Tybalt.

Fantastic Shakespearean names, in my opinion (my daughter has one too so I am clearly biased). Yes, they are extremely unusual but where's the harm in that?

I would say definitely a girl's name. Purely because of the Shakespeare association. I don't like it for a boy.

but prefer Devizes

It may have been a beautiful girl's name in the past, but it means, well, hero now.

Somebody in the Saturday Guardian had a Hero and a Tybalt. Serously-poncy-trying-too-hard in my opinion!

Enid, you may like the name Devizes, but have you ever been there? It would put you right off...

I should like it because I really like old, classical name....but for some reason I don't.

I associate it with boys now too (probably Hiro's fault in Heroes).

I think it's a bit silly TBH. But I hope she grows into it and it suits her. MIL was fantastically rude!

Haha seeker, you too? Hero is quite nice, although not one I'd choose myself - but Hero AND Tybalt is just too much. IMO.

I assumed from the title that it was a boy.
I would have been inclined to have a pretty name like Harriet and then shorten to Hero (then she has the option of changing if she hates Hero!)You can tell from this comment that I hate it!

I love it is one of my wisH I had the guts names! People will soon get used to it.

we have a hero on march 08 postnatal thread, i think its a lovely name

It's a fabulous name ... always nice when people give uncommon names to the correct gender (thinking of all the little girls called Paris )
