Thoughts on Cielo for a boy?

What are your thoughts on Cielo for a boy?

Are you Spanish? I don’t think it works as a name for a boy or a girl. In spanish it’s usually a term of affection for your child or partner like darling/sweetheart. It would sound very strange especially for a boys name IMO

Circlesquaretriangle · 28/02/2026 23:43

They will be forever spelling it out and people will have problems pronounouncing it. Don't do it to your dc.

bluecupcakev · 01/03/2026 00:13

My other options were Kai, Casper, Claude, Cairo, Ángel and Julian.

Me and my partner like Kai the most because it’s easy to pronounce in English and Spanish. However my Spanish speaking grandma was being mean about it saying “Kai” wasn’t a “real” or “full” name or that he’ll need another one.

Is it pronounced Sello (as in a brand of sticky tape) or Cello (as in the musical instrument)?I'd say no for either pronunciation.

My first thoughts too, as well as a brand for some kind of ceiling plaster.

I like Claude and Julian.

Angel would be teased in UK, I'm sorry.

Cairo is a bit try-hard and Kai is just not a great vibe.

StarCourt · 01/03/2026 00:37

That’s a restaurant where I live

Diamond7272 · 01/03/2026 00:48

Sounds like a pharma medicine for something nasty like a sexually transmitted infection, something itchy anyway...

"Here, take this course of cielo tablets, 2 a day, and wash your hands thoroughly when you use the toilet"

I'd avoid that name.

I wouldn't call a child 'tena' either...

Or 'anusol'

So you can cross them off the list too :)

Dillydollydingdong · 01/03/2026 00:56

No one will ever know how to pronounce it or spell it. Kid will get fed up explaining and maybe get embarrassed. He might even get teased. Just call him George, James or Henry!

SnowFrogJelly · 01/03/2026 00:59

Awful

Pettenell · 01/03/2026 02:55

From your updated list I would use either Casper or Claude. Both of these are good names that work cross-culturally. I think Cielo is too difficult, Kai doesn't appeal to me, nor does Julian. Angel doesn't work in English culture, Cairo I suspect the same.

BoxOfCats · 01/03/2026 03:00

As far as I’m aware I think it’s used as a term of endearment in Spanish for a romantic partner, similar to how in English you might call your other half “honey”.

Are you raising the child in the uk? If so Cielo and Angel are completely inappropriate as nobody will pronounce them correctly.
Of your others I like Casper, Claude and even Cairo is quite cool.

LadyMinerva · 01/03/2026 04:59

I had a car 20 odd years ago that was a Daewoo Cielo. Some cars are worth naming your children after, this one was not.

Eenameenadeeka · 01/03/2026 05:08

I think people would struggle to pronounce that one. I'd go with Casper or Julian from your list.

isthismylifenow · 01/03/2026 05:16

It's the name of a clothing range and where I live it's also the name of a furniture chain.

So I immediately thought of couches.

Tezza1 · 01/03/2026 05:21

Live in Sydney. I taught a brother and sister who had been born in Cuba. Dad was Cuban and mum Australian. The girl was called Paloma which was lovely, but not very unusual, but he was Cielo which I thought was most striking. He used a pronunciation like Se-ello. He was only about seven and I was only at the school another couple of years, but in the time I was there, none of the kids or teachers thought twice about it, or had any problem with it. I very much doubt there would have been a problem at high school, because there were a lot of interesting and unusual names.

janietreemore · 01/03/2026 07:33

Not unless you live in a country where people will pronounce it properly. Nice name though.

troppibambini6 · 01/03/2026 07:34

No. It’s not pronounced the way you said. It’s Italian for sky.
Any of the others you suggested would be better.

It's also Spanish for sky with an O on the end, which would be pronounced the way OP said.

ImWearingPantaloons · 01/03/2026 10:10

Makes me think of Sharon Tate unfortunately so it’s a no from me.

Yes, in my family we have little Kia, Caddy, Shogun and 207. (Thankfully they are cars, not children.)

bootsroots · 01/03/2026 12:16

I think it’s cool. So what if he has to help a few English speakers pronounce it? It’s not hard to say once you know it. I vote Cielo!!

It’s not just the English speakers, it’s the Italian speakers!

Although admittedly there are unlikely to be too many.

Like Coeliac disease?

It’s not like that at all. Means sky and pronounced Sello in Spanish and Cello (like the instrument) in Italian.
