Brianna!

DH and I love thr name Brianna for a girl.

But we have told it to two family members and they both misheard it as "Rihanna". Admittedly both are a little hard of hearing.

Do you think this would be a common problem for her in real life?

I don't think the similarity to Rhianna is the big issue here

Brian is the issue, not the Rhianna. That and the tragic association linked above.

I wouldn’t let that put you off.

Nofeckingway · 24/02/2026 11:11

Brianna reminds me of Teen Mom . It's a popular name in the US . Shortened to Bree a lot. But if you and DH like it then everyone else in your life will eventually like it too.

"Teenage boy"
"His name"
"He"

Real classy there

Blueuggboots · 24/02/2026 11:12

I’m an outlander fan so I thought of Brianna from outlander.

NamingNoNames · 24/02/2026 11:14

I don't like it. Makes me think of Brie and Brian.

BananaCustard1 · 24/02/2026 11:15

I like the name Brianna. it’s yours & DH choice so go for it.

SnowFrogJelly · 24/02/2026 11:15

Not keen
Bryony is nice

FaceBothered · 24/02/2026 11:17

I don't see how two people being a little hard of hearing, is going to make it a common problem for her in life?

Sazzles169 · 24/02/2026 11:20

FYI all, Brian is a family name so we are not worried about that. We also like Bree / Brie. Husband dislikes Bryony/Briony/Briar/Brielle.

Thanks for context re TV shows etc.

I do think of Brianna Ghey unfortunately

And people called Brian

And the cheese

Many names can be misheard though - I know a Hannah who gets called Anna, and a Jenna called Gemma a lot. I wouldnt let that be the issue.

It's commonly used enough for it not be associated with this one case. I neither like nor dislike the name, however.

EscCtrl · 24/02/2026 11:25

Brie & Brian... Cheesus Christ

Nasty. This was a child who was murdered. What is wrong with you?

TheIceBear · 24/02/2026 11:31

Gosh I hate it sorry . Nothing to do with Rihanna I just think it’s not a very feminine name . But we all have different taste I guess

AgnesMcDoo · 24/02/2026 11:33

Fans of Outlander will associate it with that rather than Rihanna.

its not my cup of tea but fundamentally there’s nothing wrong with it

ananasfritz · 24/02/2026 11:40

I think Brian(n)a is a more commonly used and longer-established name than Rihan(n)a, so probably not a hugely common mishearing or mistake.

Unfortunately MN is full of people who never miss an opportunity to misgender.

Even for MN this is a new low.

FreeFromWhat · 24/02/2026 12:01

And the cheese

I love a bit of Brie on toast and that's what I'd think of first.

AddictedToBooks · 24/02/2026 12:12

I think it's a lovely name and if you like it then there's no reason why you shouldn't use it.

The name "Brianna" was around long before the case regarding poor Brianna Ghey (and you don't get the same reactions regarding the names "Scarlett" and "Edward" who were Brianna's killers) and if I met someone called Brianna, I'd honestly just think it's a nice name - yes I might briefly think of Brianna Ghey but just like I think of Milly Dowler briefly or Holly and Jessica when I hear those names.

I don't think it will be misheard as Rihanna often. I vote for "Go for it"

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2026 12:18

It's a nice enough name, popular in the US I think. It's different enough to Rihanna, I doubt it'll be mishead because the first sound in the name is quite different.

Enko · 24/02/2026 12:22

I like it and think its pretty. Yes people may mishear but then they get corrected and learn after 1 try imo.

Years ago I met a Persephone and misheard it as Stephanie. I learned and called her Persephone going forward.
