Finn or Alexander?

Its either Finn Alexander or Alexander Finn for my baby boy. If the first name is Alexander, he'll prob be either Sandy or Alex day to day. Not personally that keen on Xander. Curious to hear others thoughts!

My son is Finn Ezra so out of your choices Finn Alexander

HoorayHattie · 23/02/2026 20:16

I like both names but would have voted for Alexander as I love Xander as a shortened version. However, as you don't like that, I've voted for Finn

Not keen on Sandy . . . sounds a bit dated to me. Sorry!

shoopshoopdedoo · 23/02/2026 20:20

Alexander, definitely! Such a lovely name. To me, Finn is fine but just seems a bit insubstantial to me, when compared with Alexander. Love Alex and Sandy as nicknames. Like you, I’m not keen on Xander.

I know a Finn Alexander - prefer it this way round to the other 🙂

Pancakesbythedozen · 23/02/2026 20:25

I have a Fynn.

Bristolandlazy · 23/02/2026 22:01

Either but not Sandy. Alex is nice.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 23/02/2026 22:03

Alexander. There are tons of Finns just now. And one Fynn, apparently.

BoleynMemories13 · 24/02/2026 06:57

I much prefer Finn

Sandy is awful. Alex is ok but Finn is more sparky.

KarriTreeSullivan · 24/02/2026 10:18

I dont know why, but I love Sandy as a nickname! I imagine a tall strapping man, with dark blonde hair.

Alexander is a fantastic name, and I'm currently listening to Alexander Armstrong on Classic fm!

Finn is just a bit, 'meh', for me, its perfectly nice but not a patch on Alexander.

NamingNoNames · 24/02/2026 10:19

I like Sandy. I know a lot of people called Alex, many female. Finley is very popular, which puts me off Finn, but Finn is cooler.

Alex is less trendy so is unlikely to date.

Agree all this.

I don't loathe Finn, but it isn't, to me, the classic that Alexander is. It was sort of fresh and trendy about 15 years ago among people I know, and has kind of peaked I would have thought.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/02/2026 20:17

I love Alexander. Much prefer Xander to Alex.

what about Xandy or Xan

Firebird83 · 24/02/2026 21:35

I love Sandy as a nickname for Alexander. Love Alec as well.

Alexander Finn

wafflesmgee · 24/02/2026 21:38

Love Alexander / Alex but not sandy (or Zandy?!)
I'm not keen on Finn, I just think of a fish fin flopping about or the giant called Finn in a legend

Londonmummytotwo · 26/02/2026 05:19

Thanks All. Didn't realise Sandy could be so divisive! It's a common diminutive in Scotland so I didn't really give it a thought.

A friend of mine is Alexander, who is known to all as Sandy, yes from Scotland.
I love the name Slexander, I have one of my own, known as Alex.
Finn is a nice name to go with; Alexander Finn.

tallyoh · 27/02/2026 16:26

My DS is Finn and we love it (so does he). I really liked Finn Alexander as a middle name but it created potentially unfortunate initials so we went for Finn Ellis instead.

I’m not a fan of Sandy. Feels feminine to me. But each to their own.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 01/03/2026 11:33

I like both but I like Alexander Finn slightly more. I think that's partly because Alexander has lots of interesting short forms and partly because it feels a bit fresher and more surprising that way round - so many people have a "trendy" first name and a more traditional middle name.
