Names like Wilbur

I love vintage and older baby names, especially those that are softer sounding. We already have already used Rupert and Theodore.

We've recently found out we're expecting a boy. I had a huge girl name list but can't find many boys names that Iove. DH and I both love Wilbur but I'm aware of the pig connotations and the general dislike of the name.

Can you suggest any other similar names? I don't like Wilfred because it's too popular here. We've also talked about Barnaby but DH isn't as keen. Middle name will be Charles (family name).

I have a Wilbur and there is no dislike for the name that I have come across and never the link to the pig in charlottes web. You have given it too much thought. It’s a gorgeous name.

I see we're a handful of posts in and already reached the "suggest names the OP has specifically said she doesn't want to use" stage.

Why do people do this? Do they think the OP will change their mind if it's suggested enough times?

Thank you. That's really good to know. At the moment, no other name is coming close for me. I also think it's gorgeous.

Also know a Wilbur and everyone loves it!

Also like Leonard.

I love Wilbur. My husband wasn’t keen so we didn’t end up using it.

What about Gideon?

It has a similar soft, old feel to me

Overtheatlantic · 14/02/2026 19:12

George? It has a similar vibe but is a much nicer name.

The only Wilbur I have known was shortened to Willy by just about everyone. Which may or may not be a problem.

I like Gideon, Simon, Diggory and Stanley. A friend of mine had pet guinea pigs called Wilbur and Orville, it is an obvious pairing.

Thank you. That's really good to know. At the moment, no other name is coming close for me. I also think it's gorgeous.

There were 70 Wilburs named in 2024 in England and Wales so, while fairly uncommon, it can't be that unpopular. I would go for it if you both like it
