I recently came across two little girls with uncommom names but although ive never really considered them before, they are starting to grow on me.

What are your thoughts on

Morag

And

Jessamine

Both are fine. I'd expect a Morag to be of Scottish heritage and older.
Jessamine would probably be Jess.

They sound a lot more interesting than the names that are currently popular.

Elizabeta · 13/02/2026 21:49

I really like Jessamine, and Jocasta which is similar. Less keen on Morag, but I see how it could be cool.

Giraffehaver · 13/02/2026 22:23

Not my personal taste but both are good strong names

NuffSaidSam · 13/02/2026 22:25

I quite like Morag although it does have cow vibes for me.

Not keen on Jessamine. It sounds like a drug/medicine.

sunflowerdaisies · 13/02/2026 22:26

I always remember reading a book with a girl called Jessamy in it and loved it - very similar to Jessamine.I don’t like Morag.

JustGiveMeReason · 13/02/2026 22:53

I don't like Jessamine.

Morag is a strong Scottish, traditional name. I quite like it (although I have no Scottish heritage)

They seem like very different 'vibe' of names to me. I am surprised you like both. I'd have thought people would like one type of name or the other.

Pettenell · 15/02/2026 06:09

I like Jessamine but prefer Jessamy. It has evocative old-charm floral vibes to me. I find Morag interesting, and like a pp said, I can see how it could be cool.

I love Morag.

I know a Jessamine and it is a lovely plant and name but I prefer Jasmine because I prefer Jaz to Jess.

Silverbirchleaf · 17/02/2026 03:40

Morag is lovely and I agree has Scottish vibes.

Jessamine I’ve not heard of before, and I’d presume was Jasmine if I heard it out loud.

pastaish · 17/02/2026 05:45

Not names I would choose but Jessamine is okay. If they are names you like, they are fine names to choose though. Nothing odd about them. Jessamine would probably be Jess or Jessa. They aren't too common, if that's what you're after.

Thedogscollar · 27/02/2026 22:01

Morag is a quintessentially Scottish name and as a Scot I love it.
Jessamine I've never heard of but I'd imagine it being shortened to Jess or Jessie.
I really like both of them.

NamingNoNames · 27/02/2026 22:11

@Thedogscollar , Jessamine is a variant of Jasmine.

wafflesmgee · 27/02/2026 22:13

Jessamine sounds like a medicine or cough sweet
i like Morag

Thedogscollar · 27/02/2026 22:29

NamingNoNames · 27/02/2026 22:11

@Thedogscollar , Jessamine is a variant of Jasmine.

Oh I like Jasmine too. Both really lovely names.

PurpleLovecats · 27/02/2026 22:43

I know a Jessamine, she’s in her twenties now and Morag I think is reasonably well known?

7238SM · 27/02/2026 22:55

Personally not keen on either and find them equally awful.

Sorry, but Morag sounds like an ugly name- despite the heritage. Mort (death), Rag 😬

Jessamine reminds me a made up name or Jessabell/Jezobel which is a prostitute.

Any other names you like?

NamingNoNames · 27/02/2026 23:10

Ugh! What a horrible post.

Ipollita · 28/02/2026 12:49

Morag is awful. I know of a couple and both pronounce it as MOH-rug which is even worse. Just no. Jessamine is quite nice, though.

NamingNoNames · 28/02/2026 13:37

@Ipollita ,is it awful because of the way they say it? I'd say it as MAW-rag (barely sounding the g) and I quite like it.

I find that names often don't sound very nice outside the original language, e.g. Julie, Amelie or Bethan.

Pyjamatimenow · 28/02/2026 13:39

Morag is a very unattractive name. Jessamine sounds like you got confused between Jessica and Jasmine

NamingNoNames · 28/02/2026 13:49

@Pyjamatimenow , Jessamine is a variant of Jasmine. It's an old name.

User6761 · 28/02/2026 14:04

I grew up knowing a few Morags (in Scotland), I like it. Same style to me as Kirsty, Flora, Mairi, Iona etc.

MrsMitford3 · 28/02/2026 14:10

Morag is the nickname of the Loch Morar Monster and a planet in the Marvel Universe. I think it is very harsh sounding from England-probably lovely in Scotland.

I agree with a PP- Jessamine sounds like medicine.

So both a no from me

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/02/2026 17:58

Silverbirchleaf · 17/02/2026 03:40

Morag is lovely and I agree has Scottish vibes.

Jessamine I’ve not heard of before, and I’d presume was Jasmine if I heard it out loud.

It's derived from Jasmine.

ginasevern · 28/02/2026 18:31

I like both of them. Probably lean more towards Morag as it's stronger and more unusual (unless you're in Scotland I guess).
