Yay or nay. Asking for a friend. Passé 1930s or due for a revival?

Is this a joke? It’s a bird’s name.

No that was Buzby, not Busby.

Sassylovesbooks · 11/02/2026 15:56

I believe the name is a place in Scotland, and was originally a Scottish surname. Personally, it's not a name I'd choose. It sounds like a surname, and as a first name is dreadful.

Babsandherwabs · 11/02/2026 15:57

Busby?? Like the hat? I never knew it was a name in the first place to warrant a revival!

NoYourNameChanged · 11/02/2026 15:57

I had a silkie bantam cockerel called Busby once upon a time. It’s a very silly name for a person though!

Overtheatlantic · 11/02/2026 15:59

Surely you’d have to be posh?

MeridaBrave · 11/02/2026 16:00

It’s a town near Glasgow.

Remember Mumsnet only has an approved list of about 20 names.

Short, easy to spell and pronounce, cute nickname opportunities.

It’s sufficiently unusual people will probably never have met one or heard of it, which can be a challenge for the owner.

No one would bat an eyelid at this in my area.

Where are you living, Broadway in NY?

PonkyPonky · 11/02/2026 16:06

I know a human child called Busby and I thought it was a lovely name when I first heard it 🤷‍♀️

Sparklinggreen · 11/02/2026 16:08

Not for a child, I think too out there

No that was Buzby, not Busby.

There’s such a monumental difference 😂

I feel so old!
Big yellow bird advertising BT!

Busby was actually Post Office Telecom. He went when it was privatised and became BT

BreadstickBurglar · 11/02/2026 16:14

I quite like it! Busby and Trilby are both hats but both named after people/characters. I’d expect the parents to be fans of either Man Utd or golden age of Hollywood musicals. I certainly don’t think it’s any worse than other surnames as first names, although the Wheels on the Bus era might be a bit trying for the wee lamb.

ginasevern · 11/02/2026 16:31

It's only 1930's insofar as the choreographer Busby Berkeley goes. I haven't heard of anyone else called it either then or since - so it's not even passe. It wouldn't be so bad if your friend was a famous pop star or footballer as they're better able to get away with quirky (daft) names. Alternatively, it would be fine if she was having a labrador. Otherwise no.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 11/02/2026 16:35

Good god no! It was a birds name in a BT advert in the 80s.

JohnTheRevelator · 11/02/2026 16:47

Makes me think of that bird that advertised BT in the 1970s/1980s!

Tedwardy · 11/02/2026 16:50

Naynaynay.

RubyMentor · 11/02/2026 16:50

shellyleppard · 11/02/2026 13:27

I immediately thought of the BT advert from the 1980's.....🤣🤣

Me too!

Translatethedog · 11/02/2026 16:51

I love it!

Giraffehaver · 11/02/2026 22:29

Bus for short? Just no

HopSpringsEternal · 11/02/2026 22:41

I know a teen Busby. Got used to it over the years and like it now.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/02/2026 23:05

Busby's was the name of the nightclub in Bristol where I met DH in the late 1980s.

TartanMammy · 11/02/2026 23:27

Like the small town/village just outside East Kilbride 😂. Wild that you'd want to call your child that. Are you doing a Beckham and that's where they were conceived.

MaggieBsBoat · 12/02/2026 05:30

God this thread is so outing that I should‘ve changed my username!
