Remus?

My husband has fallen in love with the name Remus, and I love it too. I’ve watched Harry Potter but wouldn’t immediately make the connection. I briefly think of Romulus/Remus but don’t mind the link.

It’s one of the only names we have agreed on, and both love it. The connection to Rome & HP don’t faze me at all. Should I reconsider though? Is it an embarrassing name / connection? Will people think “oh she’s a Harry Potter fan”? To be honest, I don’t mind if they do? I think all names have connections, and people will associate it with the baby/person after getting to know them. Just need a sanity check.

Thanks!

I did think Harry Potter but I don’t think that matters

Cat1504 · 08/02/2026 17:18

Harry Potter…don’t do it….especially with the remake coming out and going to be filmed over 10 years

Brewtiful · 08/02/2026 17:18

Honestly you might not mind but I imagine your child will mind if every time he introduces himself people immediately think of the Harry Potter werewolf or the two brothers who suckled form a she wolf before one murdered the other...

bells456 · 08/02/2026 17:22

I think it’s too Harry Potter honestly. How about Remy? Or Linus, Silas, Magnus, Atlas, Atticus, Cyrus, Caius?

Branleuse · 08/02/2026 17:31

I think of romulus and remus.
At least you'd have a name ready for the next one

GoodVibesHere · 08/02/2026 17:34

I thought Harry Potter first, then Romulus & Remus. Personally I think it's quite a name to saddle the poor kid with.

Exactly the same for me ^^^

ASuitableName · 08/02/2026 17:39

My first thought was Uncle Remus, the narrator of the Brer Rabbit stories.

I actually think it’s a nice name

AgentPidge · 08/02/2026 17:43

I think it's a nice name too.

Tempodrom · 08/02/2026 17:55

Only if you've got a she wolf to nurse him

sanityisamyth · 08/02/2026 18:15

Lupin

AgnesMcDoo · 08/02/2026 18:20

I’d think HP in the same way I’d think some with a child called Arwen was a mad Lord of the Rings fan.

midlifeattheoasis · 08/02/2026 18:53

Sorry, but it sounds like the name of an insurance company

tarheelbaby · 08/02/2026 19:06

I am the only person on the planet who has not read HP or seen the films so I didn't think of the HP character. But if others would, it's worth considering. (what about all those girls named Luna ...)

I am very familiar with Livy's story of Romulus and Remus - sadly, Remus is the loser ...

This won't mean much to some UK peeps but, as per @ASuitableName :
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Remus

Aluna · 08/02/2026 19:26

People always used “fallen in love with” to justify bad choices.

JMSA · 08/02/2026 19:27

Awful, sorry. And it reminds me of Rebus, the crime series.

Sofado · 08/02/2026 19:35

I think of Uncle Remus long before I think of Romulus and Remus. The Uncle Remus figure and his tales have massive slavery associations and are controversial today. I wouldn’t go there.

dove76 · 08/02/2026 19:38

Sorry I think it's terrible.

Silverbirchleaf · 08/02/2026 19:41

I’m old and think of Uncle Remus toys!

I think it’s a lovely name. Not everyone will think of Harry Potter (I didn’t realise there was a link!) and lots of names have negative connotations if you look hard enough. Eg. Nancy - increasing in popularity, but I think of Nancy-boy, meaning effeminate or a homophobic slur.

Egglio · 08/02/2026 19:42

It will get shortened. It has various questionable associations. Why not just got with Remy? If you can get past the ratatouille connection.

CurlewKate · 08/02/2026 19:43

You might get not make the connection, but other kids will. Don’t do it.

Giraffehaver · 08/02/2026 22:25

@SofadoI totally agree. It's where my mind went to first

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 08/02/2026 22:35

No…just no! 😖

AzureRose · 08/02/2026 22:36

It sounds like rhesus blood types.

Applecharlotte2 · 08/02/2026 22:36

No - he was the murdered brother!

I don’t know about HP
