I am thinking of name Isla (for pronunciation) for my baby girl but abit confused either write it ayla or isla
as ayla has more meaning (moon light)
what do you think?

I would read "Ayla" as "Aay-la" not "Eye-la".
I don't know if others would think that.
Isla is a lovely name and that's how most people spell it.

TeacheeTeacherson · 08/02/2026 12:44

I teach a couple of girls called ‘Ayla’, both pronounced ‘Isla’, think it’s normally a Muslim name.

HoorayHattie · 08/02/2026 12:45

I've only come across Isla & Aisla . . . I've never come across Ayla

It all depends on how you want to pronounce the name ~ Eye-la or A-la

Although it's nice to choose a name for the meaning, the day-to-day issues of spelling and pronunciation should take precedence IMHO

Cocktailsandcheese · 08/02/2026 12:52

If you want it pronounced eye-la then I would have thought it should be spelt Isla. It's a lovely name.

Ayla (name) - Wikipedia

Isla is very popular and unless you have Turkish heritage I would use that spelling otherwise she'll be correcting the spelling or pronunciation.

There’s a girl in my daughter’s class called Ayla but pronounced Isla. It’s very confusing. Ayla to me is ay as in hay!

dailyconniptions · 08/02/2026 14:27

Ayla sounds like ailer. Isla is the spelling you need for that pronunciation.

ImFineItsAllFine · 08/02/2026 14:31

Before reading this thread I'd definitely have pronounced Ayla with the ay like 'hay', so might be more straightforward to go with Isla.

dove76 · 08/02/2026 19:44

I know a Ayla pronounced Isla. I prefer the Isla spelling.

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/02/2026 21:36

I know an Ayla pronounced Ay-la (not eye-la) so I would assume that pronunciation. I think I’d choose Isla for an easier life!

Calliopespa · 09/02/2026 08:21

I'm not a fan of unusual spellings, but that probably isn't the worst of them.

NamingNoNames · 09/02/2026 10:16

It's not a different spelling, they're different names, but many will think it's just a different spelling.

Braindraining · 09/02/2026 10:17

Spell it Isla. It’s a lovely name.

miniaturepixieonacid · 09/02/2026 10:44

They're different names to me. I've taught both (obviously more Islas than Aylas!)

Ayla - Eh? - luh (A-luh - not sure how to write it phonetically. Like Capital A)
Isla - Eye - luh

All the girls with both names have been white British though, I didn't know Ayla was a Muslim name.

NamingNoNames · 09/02/2026 11:41

@miniaturepixieonacid , it's Turkish not Muslim.
