Any easy tools for playing around with baby name combinations?

We’re just casually playing around with baby names at the moment and started wondering about combining or blending names (nothing too out there!).
I’ve been scribbling ideas on paper but it gets messy fast 😅
Has anyone used any simple tools or methods to test name combinations, just to see what flows nicely?
Not looking for anything super serious — just curious what others have tried.

Avoid bad initial combos..like BUM /Etc.
Say the names out loud 50 times in a row - practice for toddler /teen years when this is how many times you will use it.
Avoid daft combos..
Dd went to school with a Rory Lyons.. Presume his dm took lots of labour drugs.
You don't need tech. You need common sense.

Eh? What’s the matter with Rory Lyons?

Don’t overthink middle names though. It doesn’t matter how a full name including the middle name ‘sounds’ as no one except for new parents say a full name. Also don’t bother trying to make your kids names match each other or sound good together. Unless they sound positively stupid together then it doesn’t matter.

just try to choose the name you like the most and as long as it sounds ok with your surname then go fo it.

When you say combining or blending names, are you saying you want to name your child after Grandma Ethel and Grandma Grace, and call your child Ethace sort of thing?

Haha yes, definitely using common sense too 😄

We’re just in the fun, brainstorming stage really.

Nothing set in stone, just playing around with how different names sound together.

😂 Definitely not Ethace — we’re keeping it very normal, just exploring how names flow.

That’s a really good point about saying names out loud — I didn’t realize how much the flow matters until I tried it myself.
I was testing different combinations just to see which ones sound natural together, and it really helped spot awkward flows quickly.
For anyone else experimenting, I found a small tool that lets you play around with name combinations: namecombiners.com.
Totally agree though — sometimes overthinking ruins perfectly good names 🙂

List favourites.
List family names.
Cross off any that either of you dislike.
Buy and read a baby name book.

Common sense and practicality and a good ear.

Say the names in full out aloud.
Also the first name and surname out aloud.
and the initial and surname out aloud.
Look at initials, in complex ways.

Rose Anne Tonkin - RAT
Sarah Harriet Itter - S H Itter
Ella Xanthe Smithers - SMITHERS E.X.
Ivy Pamela Hucker - I P HUCKER
Peter Ian Green - PIG

Agree about middle names.

My DC don’t know their friends’ middle names and vice versa. It really doesn’t matter.

I only use my own middle name for “please confirm your full name and date of birth” type questions. HOWEVER, I have spent much my life as “first name last name” especially in a work setting -

“Send it to Josephine Bloggs in Legal.”
”Oh, Adam Smith, have you met Josephine Bloggs? She’s working on the XYZ transaction.”
”Josephine Bloggs” x 100 when answering the phone.

Most famous and important people we know as “First Name Last Name” - e.g. David Beckham, Keir Starmer, Donald Trump etc.

Flow of a name is so important but I am always a be bemused when people concentrate on the flow of first to middle.

Completely agree. People get so focused on the full name. I’ve seen threads where the OP changed the order of the first and middle names because it flowed better that way. Even though their fav name was now the middle name and the child wouldn’t be called that in day to day life. Madness to me.
