Fern or Sophie…?

Hello,

We’re down to these last two names (Sophie and Fern). Sophie is obviously more popular but we like the sound. We like the link to nature with Fern, but it’s a shorter sound.

To go with the surname Robertson.

Fern Robertson
Sophie Robertson.

Would appreciate thoughts.

My DGD is Fern, she’s one of two in her school. I think they both go well, but obviously I am biased towards Fern, because she is a smart cookie and I love her

This is not an easy choice... they have different pros and cons. Both sound great with your surname. Both have lovely sounds and vibes. Sophie is well-known and popular, and therefore safer, while Fern is unusual and in some ways more interesting. I wonder if waiting until she's born and giving it a couple of days? One of them might become the clear winner.

I really like the name Sophie and wouldn't have come up with Fern myself - but now you've mentioned it I think it sounds rather fresh and pretty.

Fern is such a nice name for a girl, without being frilly. I’ve never loved Sophie, not sure why, although the meaning is great.

Lovely choices! You can't go wrong. I agree with waiting until she's born and see whether you're more drawn to one of them. Sophie is one of my favourites but Fern Robertson does sound great!

Sophie is nice but dull. I know a lot of them. I don’t love Fern but might choose it as it’s less common.

I think with your surname I would go for Fern. It will stand out a bit more, in a good way! I already know a SR so I suspect it may be quite common.

Sophie is such a beautiful name, I love it, but it's very popular along with all the Sophia's/Sofia's, so I guess it's up to you if you are happy with that.

Fern is a lovely name, not sure of it's popularity but I knew a really lovely one who would be late 30's now.

Sophie but Sophia and Sofia are overused.
Fern is nice but I think it would get misspelt as Ferne or Fearne (neither much used but some people will struggle with any name).

Sophie Fern immediately made me think Sofa Furniture.

I love Fern! I know a very lovely and beautiful teen called Fern and it suits her so well! Sophie is a lovely classic but I know soooo many Sophie’s that it puts me off.

Sophie is popular but that’s for a reason. It’s such a nice name.

Fern was in our final 2 choices also, I love it!
