Luna as a middle name - but can I use it?

Due DC2 very soon, DH & I are still debating a middle name. We like Juniper & keep going back to it, but don't love it. DH suggested Aurora, again, like it but not totally convinced.

Then DH suggested Luna, which is a name I love. So much that our aged cat is called Luna. Initially I vetoed it on that basis but...

  • I love the name (hence choosing it a decade and a half ago)
  • it flows well
  • the cat in question is the first pet we got together, she's been with us through most of our relationship, big life events, and has been an absolute gem with DC1.
  • I'm not paying tribute to the cat as such - she's still here and hopefully has a couple more good years
  • DC2 is unlikely to be old enough to connect their middle name to the cat before cat is no longer with us

So, would it be really weird to "re-use" it as a middle name?

I personally would not choose a game that could potentially be shortened to Lune....

JaneExotic · 25/01/2026 20:43

I’d use it!

dottyrobin · 25/01/2026 20:44

My daughters middle name is the name of an old pet of mine, so slightly biased but i don't think it's weird. Just means you like the name!

Swaytheboat · 25/01/2026 20:45

I think another problem is that it's very much a pet name. I know so many dogs called Luna, and obviously you thought it suited pets too. I wouldn't want my baby to feel named after a pet that was alive when they were born.

RMAC67 · 25/01/2026 20:45

Middle name is totally fine. I wouldn’t think twice about that.

roshi42 · 25/01/2026 20:45

I’d do it! Agree with the reasons you’ve given why it’s not a problem, and more than that think your dd might think it’s quite cute. People give family names as middle names - pets are family too!

Calliopespa · 25/01/2026 20:47

I'm afraid I just don't like the lunatic association. Fine for a cat or dog.

Fifiesta · 25/01/2026 20:47

I would use it too. You love the name, it has happy, positive associations for you.
Realistically your much loved pet will overlap for a relatively short time.
Don’t overthink it.

Rehoming123 · 25/01/2026 20:48

I love Luna and would definitely use it in your situation!

HarryVanderspeigle · 25/01/2026 21:13

It's fine. Bindi Irwin was named after a crocodile and she is doing well in life. Luna is a human name too.

dailyconniptions · 25/01/2026 21:44

Luna is too close to loony/loon/lunatic. Not an attractive name at all to me.

Onthefarsideoftheworld · 25/01/2026 21:45

Luna .. laparoscopic uterosacral nerve ablation …is a medical procedure in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain .

Namingbaba · 25/01/2026 21:48

It's just a middle name so it's unlikely to result in some nicknames mentioned here. Most people don't know your middle name. I'd use it if it's your top middle name.

sunnysunshinebear · 25/01/2026 22:06

My sister had a dog who I adored growing up…. my son now shares the same name! Not a standard dog name as she picked it as her DH has vetoed it for their DC 🤣

TheatreTheatre · 25/01/2026 22:15

Lovely name
Fine to use as middle name
(would cause confusion to have a baby and cat with the same name)

Giraffehaver · 25/01/2026 22:21

Not weird at all!

Pettenell · 26/01/2026 00:13

Use it. Not weird at all!

No, it was after Steve's dog, Bindi Sue.

LivingTheDreamish · 26/01/2026 01:54

I do think it is slightly open to misinterpretation as in "we named our little girl after our cat..." and there is a risk her finding out when she's a bit older and thinking WTF. On balance I probably wouldn't.

mathanxiety · 26/01/2026 02:41

I would definitely use it.

bells456 · 26/01/2026 03:23

It’s fine. If you’re unsure, you might like Lyra instead? Athena also came to mind.

Duejuly26 · 26/01/2026 08:38

My dog has a very human name (think along the lines of Kevin) and I am planning to give the baby who I’ll be having this year his name as a middle name on purpose 😂 the dog is a big part of my life who will no longer be with us at some point in the next 5-10 years and I want to make sure no one ever forgets him as mental as that may sound 😂

FringeTime · 26/01/2026 09:03

IstillloveKingThistle · 26/01/2026 09:08

Not for me I’m afraid. It’s a dogs name.

Why would a middle nane be shortened?
