Jude Jones for baby boy?

quillo · 16/01/2026 12:27

Working through boy names for our baby and Jude is stuck in my head. Surname Jones.

Others we like: Julian, Kieran, Elliot, Theo, Lucas, Felix

Any strong vibes either way for Jude or the Jones surname pairing?

Thanks!

Super cool name!

I think one syllable last names go better with a 2+ syllable first name. (so eg Bill Smith, no. Billy Smith, yes.)

(Also Jude sounds like rude and is also now a popular bladder supplement (as seen on Dragon's Den!)

Edited

Will Smith seems to have done all right.

No, Will Smith sounds comical imo. Billy Smith or William Smith sound so much better.

So I agree about not using a one syllable first name with a short surname.

i also dislike as a name Jude because it means Jew in German.

Super cool name!

Cool? I can’t believe you’d think that.

TomatoSandwiches · 16/01/2026 17:58

Not a fan, there are so many double J names it gets a bit naff imo.
Jones is a very common surname, you need something a bit special to balance it and give his name some personality instead of a hairdresser name iykwim?

What's the most out there names you like?

HugoYorway · 16/01/2026 18:00

@Lollylavender , No, Will Smith sounds comical imo. Billy Smith or William Smith sound so much better. He's Willard.

RegalDiamondMonster · 16/01/2026 18:10

Jude Jones sounds like the name of the most popular kid in the class. Jude is very popular round here - I'm not a massive fan though. Of your list my favourite is Felix.

Still sounds better as its two syllables imo

HugoYorway · 16/01/2026 19:06

@Lollylavender , I disagree. It depends on the names. Billy Smith sounds babyish and William Smith sounds boring.

You could also apply it to pop/rock band names. Many of them have names that are '1 syllable 2 syllables' or '2 syllables 1 syllable' but it doesn't mean that others don't sound right.

(Examples: Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, Take That)

Samdelila · 16/01/2026 19:08

Love it.

Zephyrcrossing · 16/01/2026 19:09

Jude Jones, or any surname that is one syllable, to my ears sounds abrupt and most certainly doesn't flow, unlike Julian Jones, Kieran Jones, and Elliot Jones, ( all very nice together).
Felix, Lucas, and Theo sound okay....but Jude Jones, is an uh-uh from me.

Pebbles16 · 16/01/2026 19:10

I think it's perfectly lovely. Depends if your baby looks like a Jude when he's born...

HugoYorway · 16/01/2026 19:21

How about Nathan, Indiana or Inigo?

How on earth does a jude look???

Idontthinkicandothisanymore · 16/01/2026 21:02

Jasper Jones.

I do like Jude. It is cool. But it does have sad connotations (Jude the Obscure, Judas). Like naming your child Ophelia.

Jude the obscure is the saddest book ever and the film is horrifying

notacooldad · 16/01/2026 21:08

I know a Jude Jones and although I wasnt sure, I have grown to like it.

Mum3542 · 16/01/2026 21:08

Felix is nicer

Some babies just don't look like the name you had in mind. Names have a sort of vibe, and you might have thought of Jude for him but once he's arrived he might look like a Jacob. We had one, and he ended up not having the trendy name but an 'old man' name. 20 years later and the name was everywhere.
(something like 'Jack' was named Arthur instead)

Anon501178 · 16/01/2026 21:27

Sounds like a mouthful to me, too many J's.
I think Elliot Jones has a strong ring to it.If not Lucas Jones, Felix Jones would both work fine.

Alexandrine · 16/01/2026 21:40

I really like alliterative names but unfortunately I’m not keen on Jude or Julian - Jude because it’s just so trendy now and risks dating (just like lovely Theo too unfortunately) and Julian feels a bit feminine to me, although it does sound very nice with Jones.

How about Jago? Jago Jones sounds cool and is a kind of mix of Julian and Theo. Although I like Lucas and Felix from your list too.

And JJ as a nickname works too 🙂

It doesn't flow OP sorry.

user2848502016 · 16/01/2026 22:23

I think Jude Jones is awkward to say, sorry!

I like Felix best from your list
