Silvia/Sylvia/Sylvie

I am going to preface this by acknowledging that some of what I'm going to say is illogical 😆

Sylvie is on our shortlist, but my reservation is that even though I know it's a full name, it feels a bit nicknamey. We also have four nephews/nieces whose names all end in -ie/-ey and it just feels like we'd be adding to the pile.

I'd like the longer option, but I think as I work in healthcare, Sylvia to me is very much a woman in her 60s/70s!

I am well aware that Silvia is, in essence, exactly the same. But the Latin spelling makes it feel slightly different/fresher to me, it would go well with our DSs name which is also Latin origin. We'd also love a bit of a nod to Italy in our baby name so that attracts.

Just wondering what people think? 😊

Love Silvia, don’t mind Sylvie, but don’t like Sylvia at all. (This might be because I’m originally from a Central European country where the “y” sound is quite different to the “i”.)

Emanwenym · 06/01/2026 23:21

My y and i sound different too, and the 'ylv' seems a bit unpleasant.
Sylvie has it too but I sort of say it more like sil-vie

LasVegass · 06/01/2026 23:32

Gorgeous names, whichever you choose. I know a 20 year old Sylvia, it really suits her.

Copperoliverbear · 06/01/2026 23:38

Sylvie

JillyComeLately · 06/01/2026 23:42

Throughout my life I have only known three Sylvia's, they have all been really beautiful women, so I love the name.
Their names have also been shortened by some to Sylvie, even Syl.
Not as elegant imo.

Emanwenym · 07/01/2026 13:18

Throughout my life I have only known two Sylvias, they have both been unpleasant women, but I dislike the name anyway.

amy480 · 07/01/2026 13:21

one of the Sylvia’s I knew had a best friend called Valerie (Sylvie and Val). Pretty sure Valerie is due a comeback although not at all keen on the Val shortening!

PistachioTiramisu · 07/01/2026 13:25

Another option would be Sylvana?

ChubbyPuffling · 07/01/2026 13:27

Had a granny Sylvia... she would be 105 now. People always called her Sylvia.

Emanwenym · 07/01/2026 13:28

Sylvestra

Ladybird69 · 07/01/2026 13:36

I love Sylvie but also love Sylva/Silva.

HairyToity · 07/01/2026 13:59

I prefer Sylvie

Robogob · 10/01/2026 01:01

Sylvie is a stunning name. I predict that it’s going to skyrocket in popularity over the next few years, which may or may not bother you.

Robogob · 10/01/2026 01:02

Have you considered Silver? It’s kinda cool!

Bournetilly · 10/01/2026 01:03

I love Sylvie! I don’t like Silvia/ Sylvia though.

meltycat · 10/01/2026 02:00

Sylvie deffo! It both sounds beautiful and looks really nice typed as well

BengalBangle · 11/01/2026 03:09

My dog is called Silvia, aka Silvie, Sil, Silly.

user1492757084 · 11/01/2026 07:20

Do you like Silvana?

whichmicrowave · 11/01/2026 08:18

Team Sylvie here! Our friend had a similar thought and was initially leaning towards Sylvia to shorten to Sylvie, but her DH pushed for Sylvie. It really suits her, lots of ‘what a lovely name’ when people hear it too ☺️

Friedakhalosparrot · 11/01/2026 12:12

My name is Sylvia and I’m in my late forties and I hate it! Always felt like an old lady name and it gets spelled incorrectly all the time. I get called Sylvie/Sylv which is slightly better but not a lot!

MadamCholetsbonnet · 17/01/2026 20:08
