Just found out we are having a baby girl and would love some wise mumsnetters input and suggestions. Some criteria:

  • works for a baby and a "serious" grown up
  • works internationally
  • not too popular in UK but known

We have a shortlist but none feel quite right.

  • Ingrid (Indi) - love but not sure if she would feel the same, may be too harsh
  • Erika - ditto
  • Greta - ditto and not sure on nicknames
  • Imogen
  • Harriet (Hattie) - is it too "horsey"/plain?
  • Henrietta (Hetty) - too "horsey" / frilly?
  • Frey/ja - too popular?

Frida?

it sits in my brain with Freja and Ingrid.

I loved the name Imogen when I was pregnant last year. My husband ruined it (I suspect on purpose, looking back) by saying he could call her “little Mo”. We did not use Imogen. I don’t think anybody else has ever had that thought cross their mind before.

I think Greta is absolutely lovely but if you are going to be pronouncing it the non-Anglicised way, you may become frustrated at the anglicised pronunciation.

Agree with the pp who said Lara travels well.

Lara is fantastic.
I love Greta and Ingrid too. One Greta I know is always Greta, and the other is Gee. The Ingrids I know both use Inge as an abbreviation.

Alternatives:
Frida
Romy
Marit
Elsa
Brigitte
Johanna
Isadora
Nora
Alma

  • Ingrid (Indi) - i love this too and since Astrid has gained popularity I think it paves the way fir ingredients a bit. Indi is a cute shortening
  • Erika - its OK, prefer Erica spelling. Just not my style
  • Greta - I like it
  • Imogen - lovely
  • Harriet (Hattie) - i really like Harriet, Love Hattie
  • Henrietta (Hetty) - also love this
  • Frey/ja - too popular? - way too popular in my area though I've not come across any Freja's I know loads of Freya's and quite a few Freyja's

My favourite is Ingrid nn Indi, closely followed by Henrietta and Imogen
