Can you remove a name within a year or only add?

I know you can add an extra forename within a year of a child's birth, but if you change your mind about a middle name can you have it removed without resorting to deedpoll?

anyone know?

I have a middle name that I have just quietly dropped. It is on my passport but that is about it.

But to answer your question specifically, I have no idea. Could you contact your local council for advice?

You can change it however you like. A friend just changed her dd's first name from Ffion to Flinty.

Actually she spelled it Flintie, not that it's particularly relevant.

llareggub, that was my other question. if a middle name is on your birth certificate does it have to be on your passport and given to your bank etc?

Yes, without deedpoll, because it was within the year.

When I was registering DD there was a woman ahead of me in the queue who wanted to change her baby's name. For the THIRD time. They told her she would have to do it by deed poll.

But I think it's quite easy to drop a middle name. My mother has three names and only two of them are in her passport for some reason (ironically the one she likes most is not in there)

You can only add a name in front of the childs first name in their first year.

The childs original first name (when born) will become a middle name.

You can never take away a name, can only add in front of a name.

This way of doing it is only the way you can do it by going through the registry office.

My boss changed her DS name from Callum to Cal when he was 10months - he was never going to be a callum! They permit one name change within the first year.

We changed all of DSs forenames (he has 3)just before he was 12m old.

On the "short" birth certificate you get just the new names, on the full certificate you get the old names plus the new names.

We were told you had to get it right first time! I've never heard of being able to change/add names.

You can do it within 12 months.

We changed DS3s names. His first name was a "shortened" and we changed it to the full version, his middle names we changed completely.

well i've already added one, so maybe they won't let me make another change. i didn't know you could remove, so didn't do it at the same time.

wonder if i can just leave it off the passport. will give it a go.
