Name place names

There are some name place names that I love. I wouldn't use them IRL as I have no connections to those places and that would matter to me.
For example I think Adelaide and Devon are gorgeous. I also love Paris. I wouldn't use it but I do think it's a beautiful name.
Do you or your children have a name place name and do you love or loathe them?

My Nephew is Derry. Not named after as such but inspired by Derry Matthews rather than after the Irish City. Incidentally I've just read that my own name Clare is also a place name in Ireland

I love the following place names.

for Girls.... Egypt. Cairo. Italy. Asia. Dakota. India. Albany. Windsor. Cyprus. Italy. Sicily.

Names that are place names but probably recognised as "normal" names before place names.

Georgia. Florence Virginia. Bethany. Shannon.

For boys I quite like ... Hudson. Chester. Kingston.

Mumofgirls2017 · 29/12/2025 15:24

I’d never use them again as no connection but guilty pleasures…

DS would have been Adelaide if he was a girl. Love it!

My friend is called Devon (female)

I like Vienna.

Victoria, Florence, Sienna all a bit boring.

Knew an Alberta growing up (currently 30s).

Ed Sheeran’s kid has the middle name Antarctica I think.

ResusciAnnie · 29/12/2025 16:21

I also absolutely LOVE the name Israel but goes without saying I wouldn’t use it in the current climate. Jill Duggar has a little Israel…

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 29/12/2025 16:23

Someone I used to work with gave all her children Suffolk middle names.

The girls' middle names were Shelley and Clare. The boy's middle name was Cavendish.

I always thought that was rather lovely.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/12/2025 16:35

I know a Venice.
There's also a Bristol on one of the American home renovation programmes.

HugoYorway · 29/12/2025 16:40

I know an Israel. I didn't think anything.

RegalDiamondMonster · 29/12/2025 17:07

I think Adelaide is different from some of the others because it was a girl's name first. The place was named after a Queen called Adelaide. A bit like lots of places being called Victoria. So i think you could use it without any connection to the city.

GoldenRosebee · 29/12/2025 17:08

I love Paisley - because paisley print and it has lovely sound, not because of town.

PhantomAfternoonTea · 29/12/2025 17:17

I know a family where the three little girls all have Scottish place names as middle names - Iona, Skye and Morven. Love those names!

MaggieBsBoat · 29/12/2025 17:19

My friend’s husband is called Kiev! I always think of chicken.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/12/2025 17:23

DD is named after the Hope Valley in Derbyshire.

My DBs, DSis and I all have a Jamaican place name in our names.

Stefanosgirl · 29/12/2025 17:56

One of my nieces is called Talia, which is short for Italia, her sister's name is Venezia, but she goes by Vanessa outside her family.

Hiptothisjive · 29/12/2025 18:03

From across the pond you hear Sienna. Savannah, Victoria, Charlotte, Hudson, Georgia, Indiana, Diego, Alton, Jasper etc etc

Please don’t name your kid Toronto. Which btw means trees standing in water.

Am805463 · 29/12/2025 21:35

I love Adelaide and Sydney for girls and would have used them with no issue but I had four boys lol.

miniaturepixieonacid · 30/12/2025 00:44

I once knew sisters called called Sydney and Atlanta - they had two cousins (not sisters) called Dakota and Savannah. Individually, I like all those names but as a theme, it was probably a bit much!

I like India and Victoria. Georgia is okay too. In theory, I like the sounds of America, Alaska, Kenya and London but I wouldn't actually use any of them.

I agree that Devon is nice.

I read a book as a child where the main character was Tallahassee (she was probably conceived there, I can't remember). Has a cute, quirky ring to it somehow. Though obviously I'd never actually call a child that.

Haha, I love it when coincidental themes like that come along.

I once had a form group of about 12 children with 2 girls both called Kitty, a boy called Felix and a boy called Rex. I called them my pet shop class (not to their face, obviously!)

OSTMusTisNT · 30/12/2025 00:48

Of course Florence! I don't think of it as a place name but if course it is.
That was a brilliant table of names

Kitty 🐈, Felix 🐈‍⬛ and Rex 🐕 - that’s a great pet shop combo!
