How to pronounce Dahlia?

Im not a fan of the Day-Lia pronunciation and much prefer Dahl-ia or Dahl-ya.
Dahl-ia comes out naturally for me I’m northern.

How do other people pronounce Dahlia in the UK?

I say Dah-Lee-uh! I think you’d end up with a variety of pronunciations, at the local garden centre they say Day-Lee-ah and give me the side eye for my way 😂

Day-lia. That's how Hugh Laurie, as Bertie Wooster, pronounced his aunt Dahlia's name in Jeeves and Wooster and that's good enough for me!

In the south of England it's day-lia, so if that's where you live I'd accept that if you choose this flower as a name then it won't be pronounced the way you want. If you don't like that pronunciation I'd go with something easier to pronounce.

I say da-lee-a. As in, the Black Dahlia case. Think it might be more of an American pronunciation though.

I would say daylia, like the flower. But I've sometimes heard people pronounce the name as dah-lia.

I think because I know a couple of Thalia's (Tarl-ia).

I have always called the flower a dah-lia, I genuinely had never heard it called day-lia before today. I’m in the north England not sure if that makes a difference.

Like Salvador Dali, I’ve always read them the same way.

I’m originally from Yorkshire and it’s always been day-lia and of course it is Aunt Day-lia in Jeeves and Worcester. I did work with someone once who wasn’t British by birth who had this name who did pronounce it Dah-lia (which sounds lovely) but she hated it because everyone pronounced it Day-lia if they didn’t know her. She used to go by her middle name instead because it annoyed her so much.

I grew up in 3 countries and have lived in Southern England for 20yrs. I've ever heard it pronounced anything other than Day-lia.

To me- Dahlia and Dali are pronounced differently.

I’d say dah-lee-ah because the flower was named after the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl and is pronounced that way.

I’d assume Day-lia like the flower. Dahl-ia is more of an American pronunciation I think.
As a name I do actually prefer Dahl-ia but if you call your baby Dahlia she is probably in for a lifetime of correcting pronunciation. Maybe if you spelt it Dahlya people would say it the way you want

I'm a professional gardener, from the North. Day-lia is the only way I've ever heard anyone say it. And I've probably had more discussions than most 😆

My neighbours have a toddler called Dahlia, I don't know how they spell it though. It's such a pretty name.

They pronounce the Dah part as the da in "dark". Dah-lee-ah.
