Im not a fan of the Day-Lia pronunciation and much prefer Dahl-ia or Dahl-ya.
Dahl-ia comes out naturally for me I’m northern.

How do other people pronounce Dahlia in the UK?

Thank you xx

Not in the UK, in Australia - Darh-lee-arh. We are backwards though😁.

millymollyminging · 26/12/2025 11:55

Day lia. Like the flower. Do you pronounce the flower dah lia?

FromageTime · 26/12/2025 11:55

Day-lia.

FestiveBauble · 26/12/2025 11:55

I say Dah-Lee-uh! I think you’d end up with a variety of pronunciations, at the local garden centre they say Day-Lee-ah and give me the side eye for my way 😂

ThisCanHappen · 26/12/2025 11:57

Day-lia. That's how Hugh Laurie, as Bertie Wooster, pronounced his aunt Dahlia's name in Jeeves and Wooster and that's good enough for me!

zurigo · 26/12/2025 11:58

In the south of England it's day-lia, so if that's where you live I'd accept that if you choose this flower as a name then it won't be pronounced the way you want. If you don't like that pronunciation I'd go with something easier to pronounce.

Grammarninja · 26/12/2025 12:00

I say da-lee-a. As in, the Black Dahlia case. Think it might be more of an American pronunciation though.

JohnBullshit · 26/12/2025 12:00

I would say daylia, like the flower. But I've sometimes heard people pronounce the name as dah-lia.

PersephoneParlormaid · 26/12/2025 12:01

Day-lia

cantkeepawayforever · 26/12/2025 12:01

Like the plant - day lee uh.

HashtagShitShop · 26/12/2025 12:01

Darl-ee-uh

I was coming on to say this. It's Day-lia

NuffSaidSam · 26/12/2025 12:02

I'd say Dahl-ia

I think because I know a couple of Thalia's (Tarl-ia).

(London).

Malliesmum · 26/12/2025 12:04

I’m Northern but I’ve never heard it pronounced any other way than Day-lia

MarsMama17 · 26/12/2025 12:04

I have always called the flower a dah-lia, I genuinely had never heard it called day-lia before today. I’m in the north England not sure if that makes a difference.

Like Salvador Dali, I’ve always read them the same way.

I’m originally from Yorkshire and it’s always been day-lia and of course it is Aunt Day-lia in Jeeves and Worcester. I did work with someone once who wasn’t British by birth who had this name who did pronounce it Dah-lia (which sounds lovely) but she hated it because everyone pronounced it Day-lia if they didn’t know her. She used to go by her middle name instead because it annoyed her so much.

JDM625 · 26/12/2025 12:15

I grew up in 3 countries and have lived in Southern England for 20yrs. I've ever heard it pronounced anything other than Day-lia.

To me- Dahlia and Dali are pronounced differently.

YippeeKayayeMF · 26/12/2025 12:17

I’d say dah-lee-ah because the flower was named after the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl and is pronounced that way.

Purplewarrior · 26/12/2025 12:18

Day-Lee-Ah

GeishaTrumpet · 26/12/2025 12:19

Dar-Leah

Blueuggboots · 26/12/2025 12:20

I would pronounce it Day-Leah.

Emanwenym · 26/12/2025 12:22

The flower Dail-ya, the girl's name Dahl-ya.

awrbc81 · 26/12/2025 12:23

I’d assume Day-lia like the flower. Dahl-ia is more of an American pronunciation I think.
As a name I do actually prefer Dahl-ia but if you call your baby Dahlia she is probably in for a lifetime of correcting pronunciation. Maybe if you spelt it Dahlya people would say it the way you want

Eifla2o18 · 26/12/2025 12:24

I'm a professional gardener, from the North. Day-lia is the only way I've ever heard anyone say it. And I've probably had more discussions than most 😆

PlazaAthenee · 26/12/2025 12:28

My neighbours have a toddler called Dahlia, I don't know how they spell it though. It's such a pretty name.

They pronounce the Dah part as the da in "dark". Dah-lee-ah.
