Im not a fan of the Day-Lia pronunciation and much prefer Dahl-ia or Dahl-ya.
Dahl-ia comes out naturally for me I’m northern.

How do other people pronounce Dahlia in the UK?

Thank you xx

Day-lia here too.
@YippeeKayayeMF just curious, how do you (you personally) pronounce Fuchsia?

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/12/2025 12:30

Scottish. Day-lia, like the flower.

PlazaAthenee · 26/12/2025 12:30

Ignore my earlier post. I've googled it and it's a common Muslim girls name so they probably spell it Dalia.

123456abcdef · 26/12/2025 12:36

The flower I’d call day-lia

the child I’d call darh-Lee-ah as that how the one I knew was pronounced so I’d default that way or ask/pay attention to how the parent pronounce

Nincompoo · 26/12/2025 12:39

Dahl-lia, like the flower.

I’ve never heard anyone say Day-lia, for either the flower or the name.

If the name of the plant dahlia is pronounced dahl - ia because it's named after Andreas Dahl (1751–89), a Swedish botanist, then the name of the plant fuchsia should be pronounced fooks - ia as it's named after Leonhard Fuchs (1501–66), a German botanist.

Emanwenym · 26/12/2025 12:43

@Nincompoo , Dahlia - Wikipedia

My dad grew them, and he pronounced them Day-lia, @Nincompoo.

and Camellia is Kam-eel-ya not Kam-ell-y-a

My dad grew them, and he pronounced them Day-lia, @Nincompoo.

I’ve grown them myself and I still call them dahlia.

I guess there no right or wrong. Lots of names have different regional pronunciations.

Emanwenym · 26/12/2025 12:56

@Nincompoo , the dail-ya pronunciation is regional to the UK.

Enko · 26/12/2025 12:58

Dah-Lee-uh. I am in the SE

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/12/2025 12:59

I agree completely, @Nincompoo. However, my mum always said Day-lia, and there’s no way I’d have argued with her!! She was scary, and always right. Even now she’s passed on, I still contradict her very quietly. 😂😂😂

Clearly not universally, since I am in the Uk 🤣

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/12/2025 13:03

Day-lia as in the flower. I’m Northern too.

MyrtleLion · 26/12/2025 13:09

I would pronounce it Rose, if only to stop any confusion.

🤣😂🤣

Emanwenym · 26/12/2025 13:11

@Nincompoo , if you are one of only a few saying it one way you'll be considered to be mispronouncing it. Monty Don says dail-yas.
😆

CurlewKate · 26/12/2025 13:12

Just tried it on my northern family. Day-lia to a person.

Nevertriedcaviar · 26/12/2025 13:15

I have always pronounced it 'day - lia' like the flower. I think most people do.

Elbowpatch · 26/12/2025 13:16

Like the flower. Day-lee-ah.

cantbearsed247 · 26/12/2025 13:17

Day-lia like the flower, I didn't know there was any other way.

Allmarbleslost · 26/12/2025 13:46

Dah-Lee-uh. I've never heard Day-lia for the name or the flower.

AgnesMcDoo · 26/12/2025 13:50

dah-lia

scotland

and no ‘r’s in it

Emanwenym · 26/12/2025 14:02

@AgnesMcDoo , dah is used to convey the da sound in 'dally', 'dar' to sound like the da in 'darling' not the dar in 'Darren'.

AgnesMcDoo · 26/12/2025 14:10

Emanwenym · 26/12/2025 14:02

In Scotland if there is an r it’s pronounced.

so your explanation makes no sense to me

darling and Darren have the same darrrr sound
