My name is Sophie. Thinking of naming new baby Sophia

I love my name and she is due the same week as me :)

I hated being named after my mother.
Plus no middle name
Please don't.

OompaLoofah · 27/12/2025 21:36

Please don’t do this OP. My mum and I have similar names - think Kerry and Kelly and the same middle name but spelt slightly differently.

When I still lived at home it caused so much confusion, little things such as when post arrives and it only had our initials on etc. The worst part was when I tried to get an overdraft/credit card - I struggled to get any credit as the credit reference agencies had linked us as the same person using different aliases. When I did a credit search under my name, I could see everything my mom had. It took ages to get everything separated and able to start building my own credit history etc.

How about making it a middle name, instead of a first name?

Also she won’t stay a baby. She will become a teen and quite possibly will also think you are weird. Trying to think what my own late teen dds would think in this scenario if I gave them my name and sorry to say I think it would be scathing,

Nearly every first born male on earth is named after the father so why is it such a big deal when a mother does it?

Slightly hyperbolic...

Moveoverdarlin · 27/12/2025 23:31

Odd. Of all the lovely names out there, why pick the same?

Are they? I actually can't think of any boys who are named after their fathers!

2nd names perhaps but definitely not 1st names

This used to be common. However a word of warning. Officials can be careless and cause problems. Adult child with same name left home but council removed me from the register of voters. Subsequent postal vote invalid and credit report had us mixed up for years which has been impossible to correct as they go on the register. Medical records mixed and transferred when adult daughter left home. Various other annoyances from careless officials and little that can be done to correct and sometimes it’s a while before the problem arises.

If your partner is okay with it, just remember that that occasionally official paperwork could/will get confused in the future. The same initials, whose post is it to open? My husband was always accidentally opening his sisters post (MR C)

My in-laws gave three names to their daughters My husband and his older brother were named after their grandfathers, but have only ever used their middle names. I didn’t know his first name for several months into our relationship until his mother was telling him off one day …
The older sister changed her name when she started school because she didn’t like being called Jenny. I’ve only known her as Sarah.

Does your name get shortened? Do you think the baby will get a possible nickname as she gets older from family to identify her from you….lots of things to consider….

As I said up thread ,I hated being given the same ,unusual ,name as my mother .It genuinely made me feel less of an individual and an offshoot of my mother .
Being referred to a "little limetree" to distinguish me from "big limetree"
And her opening my official post when I was late teens /early twenties put the lid on it !
And they didn't even have the grace to give me a middle name ,though they had done so for my brothers .

Ahhhjj…It’s like the Royle family have Baby David

pouletvous · 28/12/2025 10:27

Probably nobody will say it to your face, but most people would find this seriously weird.

It's quite usual for children to be named after a parent so there's no reason why one syllable different would be 'seriously weird'.

It was quite usual in the past, but I haven't ever met anyone born after around 1950 who is. There's a lot more naming variety these days and we see children as individuals rather than extensions of their parents.

A boy who went to school with DS is named Dave as is his dad and his dad.
The 3 go by nicknames only grandmother and mum call them Dave.

Will Smith, Michael Jordan, Robert Downey, Clint Eastwood, Alec Baldwin, Robert de Niro, Freddy Prinze, George Bush, Martin Luther King, Douglas Fairbanks, John Adams, William Pitt, Donald Trump, Henry VIII.

And Frank Sinatra, Martin Sheen, JFK, Robert Kennedy, Donald Trump Jnr, all named their own sons after themselves.

Sons born David III are often called Trey.

hardtocare · 28/12/2025 17:42

Does anyone call you Soph would be my first reservation. I have a Sophie who we regularly call Soph. What if you both responded to someone calling you soph? To me it’s confusing- lovely idea to use it as a middle name though

Hmmmm . . . I understand what you're trying to say but my point was that I don't personally know any boys (i.e. children under the age of 16) who are named after their fathers

That doesn’t mean it’s not common though. It’s really common.

Quincette · 28/12/2025 18:06

Weird. Don’t do it. Give her your name as a middle name if you love it so much.

boxsetqueen · 29/12/2025 18:01

Not weird at all. We named our daughter after her dad so she is Breanna and he is Brian.

BluesBird19764 · 29/12/2025 19:55

Sophia is a lovely name but it seems every second girl is a Sophia these days.

I know an Alex(andra), with a daughter called Alice and new boyfriend called Alex(ander)! Lol

MonGrainDeSel · 29/12/2025 22:54

Breanna and Brian sound completely different and are not comparable to Sophie and Sophia. Ditto Alexandra and Alice which are clearly totally different names with different etymological roots. I don't think you can prevent your kids going out with people with similar names!!
