My name is Sophie. Thinking of naming new baby Sophia

I love my name and she is due the same week as me :)

Always strikes me as highly narcissistic when parents do this (regardless of wether it’s the mum or dad)
As a middle name it’s fine, strange as a first name to me.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 22/12/2025 20:04

I've read this post before ages ago.

blankcanvas3 · 22/12/2025 20:05

I prefer middle names as parents names tbh, I think Sophia would be a bit odd as a name if your name is Sophie. My DD’s middle name is my name and DS’s middle name is DH’s middle name, but now we feel really guilty because DD2 isn’t named after anybody!

Peonies12 · 22/12/2025 20:06

personally I think it’s a bit weird and could very very confusing. Use it as a middle name

PevenseygirlQQ · 22/12/2025 20:07

Sophia and Sophie are both lovely names, but maybe just have Sophie or Sophia as the middle name? Or if you are set on Sophia maybe spell it Sofia? Although I do prefer the PH spelling

Yes it’s fine, nobody asks for my mums name when I introduce myself and they won’t with your daughter either.
I’ve only ever heard on here the weird idea that siblings names have to match each other in some way, I don’t get it, Why?!?

They will do for the first few years at every baby group, toddler group, nursery party, school meeting, school WhatsApp group, school party etc.

Sophia is a lovely name but yes, I agree people will think it’s odd.

HeadyLamarr · 22/12/2025 20:13

People who name their children after themselves look like narcissists.

Look at George Foreman - 5 sons called George and a daughter called Georgetta. Or Nigel and Nigella Lawson.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 22/12/2025 20:15

I know a couple with two children. The boy is named after the dad and the girl is named after the mum. I do judge.

TheaBrandt1 · 22/12/2025 20:16

People will think it is odd. Because it is odd.

Bobbie12345678 · 22/12/2025 20:19

Seriously weird. Let her be a brand new person, not some sort of version of you.

sloth75 · 22/12/2025 20:28

It's odd. Use Sophia as a middle name

Tighteningmybelt · 22/12/2025 20:31

I mean lots of people do but it’s a bit odd

Nutellatea · 22/12/2025 20:32

What about a variation? Sadhbh, Sorcha, Sarah, Saorla. Even Effy/Effie for that similar sound.

Both my parents named children after themselves and I would say that’s an accurate assumption 😂

Probably nobody will say it to your face, but most people would find this seriously weird.

Kinda like John Ramsey and Jon Benet Ramsey. Just seems like an odd thing to do 😅

SouthernNights59 · 22/12/2025 20:43

It's fine OP. Honestly, MN is like a parallel universe sometimes, it's not narcissistic, weird, or odd for parents to name a child after themselves - it's been happening forever.

Greenpeanutsnail · 22/12/2025 20:50

I knew a family where the father and 3 sons all had both first and middle names, but only 4 names were used to create those 8.

i think Sophia is a lovely name. I can see potential confusion down the line though.

OldBeyondMyYears · 22/12/2025 20:53

A friend of mine is called Isobel and she named her daughter Isabella. It was a bit strange at first, but after a couple of months people got used to it.

There is a Portuguese family on my road, whose twins are named ‘almost’ after both parents…eg Mario and Francisca (parents) and the twins are called (eg) Maria and Fransisco. Not sure if this is a cultural thing, but again, nobody bats an eyelid…it’s very clear who’s who 🤷‍♀️ (although I would imagine it gets confusing when post arrives).

Agreed!

GoodVibesHere · 22/12/2025 21:31

Of all the names in the world, the only one you can come up with is basically your own name? I mean, come on now get a grip.

TheaBrandt1 · 22/12/2025 21:38

Also she won’t stay a baby. She will become a teen and quite possibly will also think you are weird. Trying to think what my own late teen dds would think in this scenario if I gave them my name and sorry to say I think it would be scathing,

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 22/12/2025 22:08

What about Saffie? Similar but different.

Greentrilby · 22/12/2025 22:26

My sister worked with a woman called Louise who named her daughter Elouise. Madness.

Sleepybear1234 · 22/12/2025 22:28

I find it very vain when people name their children after themselves but that's just me x
