Jacob and Hamish?

I know Hamish is the Scottish James - and James and Jacob are essentially the same name - so does that rule out Hamish as a sibling for Jacob?

No I think it’s totally fine. Lovely names.

slowraindrop · 19/12/2025 21:24

I don’t think I could do it myself, once I’d made the connection. But if you go ahead, most people won’t be aware or notice!

Aligirlbear · 19/12/2025 22:32

Most people won’t get the connection, so unlikely to be an issue, but me knowing it I’m not sure I would do it

I think it's fine

Giraffehaver · 19/12/2025 23:04

Both lovely names but I wouldn't use them together for the reason you said

DramaAlpaca · 19/12/2025 23:05

I saw the connection immediately. I wouldn't do it.

WinterWooliesBaa · 19/12/2025 23:08

It would never have occurred to me.

I think the 'basically the same name' crap is dying out, it's so dated.

Pettenell · 20/12/2025 00:00

While I couldn't do it because I would be aware of it, you could probably get away with it.

YourGentleNavyPombear · 20/12/2025 00:00

No because people with Gaelic names are often asked what they are in English and I don’t think a child would enjoy explaining that it translates to their brother’s name. It would also be widely recognised as James by people of Irish descent as well as Scottish because Hamish is the vocative of Seamus.

mathanxiety · 20/12/2025 02:14

Yes, I think it rules it out as a combo.

Plenty of people would raise a very discreet eyebrow.

Are there no other names at all that you like?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 20/12/2025 02:18

Both lovely names. But once you know the connection it's a little awkward.
Could you consider
Harris
Finlay
Logan
Brodie
Ross
Lachlan
William

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/12/2025 08:16

I didn’t know the connection and think it’s fine. I’m sure there are even siblings called Jacob and James out there who have never had any issues.

HugoYorway · 20/12/2025 12:21

Call Jacob's brother Jacob too. People will think it's crackers.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 20/12/2025 12:23

I didn’t know that about Hamish.
I think Jacob is a great name but I don’t like Hamish. If you like it though use it.

KarriTreeSullivan · 22/12/2025 18:58

It would absolutely never have occurred to me that Hamish, James and Jacob are variants of the same name . And even now knowing it I actually think its quite sweet!

They use completely different letters apart from the 'a' and have such different sounds, I don't see the problem.

Have a 3rd amd call it James! (I'm not making fun, I'm being serious, its cute)

AgnesMcDoo · 22/12/2025 19:01

I’m Scottish and dont think there’s a
problem

Calliopespa · 22/12/2025 22:47

I think they are so far from the sorts of problematic names that come up on here op that I wouldn't give it a second thought if they are the ones you like. Both proper boys names, and I like them both.

Enko · 31/12/2025 14:12

They are good together IMO
