Still No Name for Baby Girl

KLRJ · 18/11/2025 12:32

Officially made it to two weeks with no name for baby girl and I feel beyond awful about it! Every name seems to have something about it that I don't like.

-Faye: love the name in theory, but calling her it seems awkward and clunky because of the single syllable and there being no obvious ways to make it seem affectionate

-Ruby: absolutely love it, sounds SO cute with our surname (Robson) but at #41 with 1020 girls given the name last year, it's more popular than my other children's names and I worry about her being surrounded by others with the same name

-Rosa: also love it, sounds incredibly classy and goes quite well with our surname (not as well as Ruby), but obvious nickname is Rosie which I don't like and is also very popular

Help me decide please! Also I'd love any other suggestions if anyone has any please. Had a couple of suggestions of Romilly on my last post which I thought was super cute but husband disagrees 🫠

What about Feydra/alt spelling? You could then nickname her Faye/Fae and have options of other NN's too.

CauliflowerCheese00 · 18/11/2025 12:37

If it helps, I haven’t come across a baby Ruby in ages!! In my world they’re all teenagers.

Northcoastmama · 18/11/2025 12:38

I LOVE Rosa, taught only one and she was feisty and bright and gorgeous. It’s not common and I’d never think to shorten it to Rosie, feels like a completely different name

I voted for Ruby - you don’t come across it as much these days and it’s one of my favourite names. The chances of her having another Ruby in her class etc are tiny.

If you love Faye best, how about the nn Effie while she’s little, to give it a more affectionate feel?

Rosa is super classy, love this too.

So hard to choose - good luck!

newrubylane · 18/11/2025 14:59

Ruby and Rosa are both lovely.

Just to point out that given that half a million babies are born in the UK every year, about a 1000 of them having the same name hardly means she will be surrounded by them. You'd be extremely unlucky to encounter more than one other in your school year, I reckon. My daughter has a name with a similar ranking and we have encountered one other child with the same name so far.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 18/11/2025 15:16

Feydra - Bad spelling of Phaedra/Phaidra?
Rosa and especially Ruby are not good with the surname.

NewJobProblem · 18/11/2025 15:31

You could use Freya with Fay as a nickname. Or Phaedra as someone else has suggested.

Ruby is also a lovely choice and I don’t think you need to worry about popularity. 1020 across the whole country is nothing!

Other suggestions: Scarlett, Romy, Romola, Felicity, Rowan, Iris, Hazel.

manicpixieschemegirl · 18/11/2025 16:05

Rosa is so lovely. I don’t think Rosie is an obvious nickname at all.

Other suggestions -

Anna
Nora
Tessa
Eve
Clara
Heidi

If you're really concerned, I think on the ONS website you can search a name and find out how many babies were born in your area with it? I did that with my little one...Ruby!

While it was on the top 100 list, it wasn't at all prevalent in our area, I think there was less than 3 the year she was born (that's the lowest denomination they provide). Was only a couple of years ago.

If you love the name, 100% use it. I can say that she is at nursery and there is no other Ruby there currently so I'm sure she won't be inundated with fellow Rubies at school either.

CocoPlum · 18/11/2025 17:07

I work with new mums and I don't think we've seen a baby Ruby in ages! It's definitely less popular than it was in the late 00s/early 10s when my two were babies.

Also, it's ok to not name your baby yet - just try not to get too in your head about it!

Can I ask - are you or your husband teachers? Most of the new parents I meet who struggle for longer to name their baby have at least one teacher in the mix!

Sherbetlemon43 · 18/11/2025 18:08

My youngest who’s 8 is a Ruby and she’s the only one in her school.

surprisebaby12 · 18/11/2025 18:08

Rosalie Faye
Romy Faye
Freya Rue

orangetriangle · 18/11/2025 18:16

how about Roisin or Rosalie
I wouldn't think of shortening Rosa to Rosie
Not keen on Rosie either but really like Rose

Lindamummyof3 · 18/11/2025 18:30

Ruby is a lovely name, and I only know of teenage girls with the name now. Auralia is cute shortened to Rae and goes well with Rae Robson .

AnnoyinglyOptimistic · 18/11/2025 18:37

Ruby DOES go nicely with your surname, and echo other posters who've said it isn't as common as you think. The only Ruby's I know are both teenagers.

Shortlisted names I had but didn't use were:

Violet
Annaliese
Lily

vixen996 · 18/11/2025 18:43

My daughter is Rose and doesn’t get called Rosie, if that’s helps

DallasMajor · 18/11/2025 18:47

I think none of them if you have got to two weeks and still not right

What style are your other children?

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 18/11/2025 18:50

I wouldn’t use Rosa if you don’t like Tosie. I think people will often get the 2 names confused.
I think Faye is nice. Classic and underused.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 18/11/2025 18:50

Rosie

Jopo12 · 18/11/2025 18:53

if 1020 babies were called Ruby last year, that's 0.17% of children born . That means you'll have to surround her in a thousand other children to find another Ruby! So you don't have to worry about it being too popular.

But I do worry why you think it's bad for a child to know other children with the same name? I had 3 other people in my secondary school class with the same name (Y7-9, then there was just 1 other from 10 onwards), and I frequently come across people with the same name born within 2 years of me. I am no less unique for sharing the name with others. It suits me, especially the shortened version which is pretty much what everyone calls me.

My own son is Harry - believe me, he is totally unique, no-one is going to mistake him for any other harry. He was best friends in primary school with another harry..

It really doesn't matter.

And if you don't like derivatives - you can make sure they aren't used until your daughter is old enough to choose for herself. Just call her Rosa until she's in high school.

CoffeeandSpaniels · 18/11/2025 18:53

I'm a midwife and I haven't heard Faye, Ruby or Rosa for years. (I vote for Ruby btw ❤️) Try not to stress, you still have almost a month before you need to register her, she will let you know what her name is x

Flosnana · 18/11/2025 18:55

Love Ruby Robson x

Worcestershirem0mmy · 18/11/2025 19:21

Call her Rosa, I wanted to call my daughter Rosa but went with something else last minute and I REALLY regret it. And she’s 6 now 😂

You mean as in Phaedra? The Ancient Greek myth? I’m guessing you don’t know the story or you wouldn’t have suggested that.
