Harris…for a girl?

AIBU?

I misheard the name “Karis” a few weeks ago and thought, ‘Harris as a girl’s name, how cool.’

I’ve done some superficial research and it seems that Harris is mostly used a boy’s first name, if at all, as it is a surname, really.

But I think it’s very fresh and cosmopolitan, and I like the unisex vibe.

What comes to mind when you think of a girl called Harris? Thoughts welcome!

Yes!!!

Brilliant. I feel so proud 😂
My daughter is South London born so not close enough to count as a Cockney.
She's likes languages. I might suggest this as her next project.

Still not getting that rhyming slang thing 😂
'Arris still doesn't rhyme.
Oh well.

The second half (rhyming part) is often dropped so a road is a frog and toad but would be shortened to frog rather than toad so it doesn't rhyme. A hair piece is a syrup (syrup of figs - wigs) not a fig.

@WarrenTofficier I used "Syrup" for wig years before I actually knew what it meant 😂

I love it when a thread wanders off into a completely different conversation.....

I can honestly say that I've never come across syrup of figs in any way other than the rhyming slang.

My dad's family were originally East End but moved out of London before he was born and my mum is a northerner. Dad wasn't a cockney but did use a couple of rhyming slang terms regularly.

I love the cockney alphabet

'ay for 'orses
Beef or mutton
See for miles etc.

Carys is frumpy and middle aged. It was popular at the same time as Karen.

How about Herrison for a girl, @tiramisufiend ?

lizzyBennet08 · 15/11/2025 14:13

Nice for a boy but not for a girl

lostintranslation148 · 15/11/2025 14:19

Would you like to be called Harris OP? I know I wouldn't.

MiddlingMarch · 15/11/2025 14:37

Harris is a boy's name.

And as for a PP suggestion, there is no way I could look at a tiny newborn girl and think "there she is, baby Michael".

Not all names are unisex. I mean, I can't imagine ever thinking of naming a boy "laura" or "gillian" or naming a girl "duncan" or "gregor"

Harris is great for an island, tweed, or as a boy/man name. Not for a girl.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 15/11/2025 14:40

Harissa? Like the spice?!

RuthW · 15/11/2025 15:27

Awful

Zitroneneis · 15/11/2025 15:36

Not any more masculine than Taylor

Zanzara · 15/11/2025 15:41

OvenChick · 15/11/2025 09:42

Too close to arris I.e. arse

This. Don't do it to your child OP.

CurlewKate · 15/11/2025 15:49

So long as you’re happy to call a boy Kate then go for it. But you won’t be. Unisex names only go one way.

Blueuggboots · 15/11/2025 15:56

It’s horrible!! Carys is a girl’s name. Harris is a boy’s name or a last name.

ParmaVioletTea · 15/11/2025 16:01

Tweed.

If you like the sound, why not Harriet? Or Karis in fact.

Remember the song “A Boy Named Sue” ?

susiedaisy1912 · 15/11/2025 16:04

No op it’s an awful choice for a girl. And isn’t it how the Americans said harass .?

Emanwenym · 15/11/2025 16:19

@Zitroneneis, Isn't Taylor from tailor, and a tailor could be female. Harris is from son of Harry, which is masculine, or Na Hearadh, which isn't. Also Haris is an Islamic name for a boy.

SpringingOn · 15/11/2025 16:27

I know several Muslim boys called Haris. It is really common. It is from the Arabic for protector or guardian rather than the English son of Harry.

Emanwenym · 15/11/2025 16:36

Poor, poor child. I’d feel very sorry for her.

Wouldn’t a woman be called a seamstress rather than being accorded the title of ‘tailor’?

Ihavepaidalotforthisstory · 15/11/2025 16:56

Harris is a surname and will have people assuming male.

The term "tailor" traditionally referred to a male specialist, often focusing on menswear. A female tailor might have been called a "tailoress or “seamstress”

Taylor Swift’s parents obviously didn’t care that they gave their daughter a male name!
