Judas/Judah and is it too similar to a family name?

I am obsessed with the name Jude and have been since I was young. However, I have a cousin called Jude, so if I was to name a son Jude, I would likely choose a longer name: Judah or Judas. I also love nicknamey names. I am aware of all the negative connotations with Judas, but myself I’m not very educated on Christianity, despite being religious. I’d assume Judas is straight away a no-go - but is it the same with Judah? Also, is there even any harm in calling him just Jude, as it’s not like I’m naming two children Jude, it’s my cousin who has the name already.

I don’t see an issue with repeating a name in different generations. You can mention it to your cousin just in case he has a weird objection, but most likely he’ll be chuffed.

Judas is on a par with Adolf.

I’m an atheist and think Judas would be an albatross round the poor kid’s neck for life.

I’d like to think I wouldn’t be discriminatory but I cannot imagine employing someone called Judas. Their CV wouldn’t make it past the first round.

I think it could work the reverse.

I would feel intrigued to meet them, and I would also feel incredibly sorry for them (whose parents are so unkind and ignorant to name them Judas). I think I would want to positively discriminate.

I know a Julius who goes by Jude. Julius is cool.

It' better to have two Judes than one Judas.

Quote of the year!

Alpacajigsaw · 15/11/2025 07:37

If your baby is going to always be known as Jude giving him a longer name officially won’t make much difference.

And for the love of God you can’t call a baby Judas. Even if you’re not religious it has negative connotations.

Judas!! Really?

DH laughingly suggested this when I said I'd like a biblical name for DS

But Judas really?
Blooming heck, I've heard it all now.

Judah is the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel and I think it's a lovely name but I agree with others about avoiding judus.

This - you have Judah meaning ‘praise’ and one of the tribes in the bible.

Judah is a great nice strong name.

Judas - absolutely no way!

You are seriously considering Judas?!!! Why not go the whole hog and call him Beelzebub or Faustus or even Satan? Just call him Jude. Not an issue.

Beelzebub is a fabulous name. One day I'm going to get a cat and call it Beelzebub.
I am also of the opinion that it's a crying shame Lucifer "fell" as an angel. It would be a beautiful name if not for the, ahem, connotations 😌

PiggieWig · 15/11/2025 08:15

Just go with Jude. Both my boys have full names and nicknames (think Thomas/Tom and Benjamin/Ben) and honestly it’s a PITA, especially when they were little. They’ve never used their full names and get annoyed when others do.

Please do not call your child Judas.

WheresBillGrundyNow · 15/11/2025 13:33

In Dante's Inferno, Judas is trapped in the deepest part of Hell, trapped in Lucifer's mouth, eternally tormented.
There’s no way I would consider naming your child this, but I was raised catholic.

qercv · 15/11/2025 14:49

Can you change the name to Judas if he ends up being vicious bastard later on?

Mwnci123 · 15/11/2025 15:00

Judas would be a mad choice (or a friend for little Myra).

Longdarkcloud · 15/11/2025 21:06

I read that the musician Yehudi Menuhin was called that as a sort of joke against his parents’ anti-Semitic landlord. They were a young refugee couple in the US and were having difficulty finding accomodation and landlords would specify things like no children, no Jews, no Blacks etc. Mrs M was pregnant at the time. They assured the prospective landlord that they met his criteria and were not Jewish and when their baby boy was born called him Yehudi or Jew.

Yes

RoamingToaster · 15/11/2025 21:08

Judas is used as an insult regardless of whether you’re Christian or not. I’d avoid it.

AliceMcK · 15/11/2025 21:11

I have a cousin, uncle and grandfather called Arthur. Three cousins named John, 2 Joseph’s plus an Uncle Joseph and many other relatives with the same names including naming my children with family names.

Stick with Jude, please don’t use Judas, even if someone isn’t Christian the reference to someone being a Judas is still used.

Your thread title has got me singing the Lady Gaga song!

YES! How have we made it to 3 pages without it being mentioned! Great song, terrible baby name IMHO. Sorry, OP.

Ihavepaidalotforthisstory · 15/11/2025 21:18

Have you considered Lucifer or perhaps Pontius?

RoamingToaster · 15/11/2025 21:18

In the past it was so common to have names running in families. If I were you I’d just use Jude. I’m sure your cousin will be fine with it. Given the age gap and distance in relationship it’s not like it will cause confusion.

Tammygirl12 · 15/11/2025 21:18

Absolutely no to Judas.

do Jude or jonah

LancashireButterPie · 17/11/2025 08:33

I'm from a huge Irish family. There are 4 of us, first cousins, all with the same name. We were named after our grandmother!
It's never been an issue.

TidyAmberPoster · 18/11/2025 23:40

Just call him Jude! Wonderful name
