Judas/Judah and is it too similar to a family name?

I am obsessed with the name Jude and have been since I was young. However, I have a cousin called Jude, so if I was to name a son Jude, I would likely choose a longer name: Judah or Judas. I also love nicknamey names. I am aware of all the negative connotations with Judas, but myself I’m not very educated on Christianity, despite being religious. I’d assume Judas is straight away a no-go - but is it the same with Judah? Also, is there even any harm in calling him just Jude, as it’s not like I’m naming two children Jude, it’s my cousin who has the name already.

@KaleidoscopeSmile , Do you realise that you are coming across as rude and ignorant?
It's headteacher not headmistress.

😂

Jude is a separate name and the two names are not connected, @MaryBeardsShoes .
Jude meaning "praised" and comes from Yehuda.
Jeremiah means "Yahweh will exalt" and comes from Yirmeyahu.

It's a bit like saying Sam is a diminutive of Sebastian, or something.

@est09 , how about Judea?

It's the name of a place, not a person.

qercv · 14/11/2025 13:26

I think Judas is a good name in the sense that would not be too many namesakes.

AgentPidge · 14/11/2025 13:29

I don't think the cousin thing as a problem unless you see them all the time. I like Jude, and Judah is a fabulous name. Or there's also Jonah and Joel.
Not Judas (or Judea!).

Balonz would also be uncommon - doesn't make it a good name!

As are Israel and Jordan (and Chester, Lincoln, etc), but they are also used as first names.

Kumquatzest · 14/11/2025 15:39

For the record I think you could use Jude even if you have a family member with the same name.

Judas, definitely no. Even if you're not Christian, the story behind the name is extremely negative and calling someone "a Judas" is synonymous with traitor or backstabber.

Judah is fine. In the Bible Judas and Judah are two totally different people.

It' better to have two Judes than one Judas.

Absolutely

Except Chester would be known as Drawers (Draws?) because of the popular SM selling phrase “chester draws”

MaloryJones · 14/11/2025 17:47

I know its a completely different name and spelling of course, but what about Jebidiah (not sure how its spelt) , or Jeb for short ?
Personally though I would name your Son Jude if that is what you like

LovelyUser · 14/11/2025 17:51

@Snorlaxo , more likely to be Ches but it's usually Chester draws.

@MaloryJones , Jedediah.

Agree.
Cousins often have the same name.

Longdarkcloud · 14/11/2025 21:01

Jude is a great name and your son and your cousin are a generation apart so not child playmates.

Still a no to Judea. Not all place names would be suitable to name a child. Hello to little Vietnam, Singapore and Eckersley.

vincettenoir · 14/11/2025 21:12

Please don’t call them Judas to appease a cousin.

This is absolutely irrelevant to the fact that I have this friend who has the nickname Jude, but go off I guess.

It might be relevant to other posters, @MaryBeardsShoes .

Beekman · 14/11/2025 21:33

I’m an atheist and think Judas would be an albatross round the poor kid’s neck for life.

I’d like to think I wouldn’t be discriminatory but I cannot imagine employing someone called Judas. Their CV wouldn’t make it past the first round.

StarlightRobot · 14/11/2025 21:35

What about Jonas? I think it’s a much nicer alternative

Mairzydotes · 14/11/2025 21:41

Your thread title has got me singing the Lady Gaga song!

WhatAKnob47 · 14/11/2025 21:45

I'd called him Jude. If that's the name you love. The other names are hideous. Have you considered a name like Ezra? What type of names do you like?

Dollymylove · 14/11/2025 21:46

Jude is fine.
Please dont call him Judas 🤣

pumpkinscake · 14/11/2025 22:00

If not Judas, how about Adolf?
