What sort of image do you get from the name Kodie? It is our top choice for our daughter, likely with the middle name of Anne or Margaret. My friend said she thought it was a boys name at first so thought I’d try consulting a name forum. Thanks all.

Why the weird spelling?

StewkeyBlue · 13/11/2025 00:25

I know Cody, spelt Cody, as a boys name.

So wouldn’t be my choice

Jasperis · 13/11/2025 00:39

Prefer Cadence or something like Kendal. Or Cody as a more usual spelling.

I personally know a Cody from DC’s school—Dad has been in and out of prison, and Cody has been permanently excluded. Perhaps PP means those types of associations?

Yes but that's a random person you know.
Probably every name in existence has somebody called that name who is a bad person.

NewGirlInTown · 13/11/2025 01:38

Awful. Absolutely awful. ‘K’ names usually are. See Wayne Rooney’s family of K’s.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/11/2025 01:40

Horrible.

CatchHimDerry · 13/11/2025 01:43

Yep, agree it’s Cody and I’d assume boy

Viviennemary · 13/11/2025 10:11

Totally dire.

TheaBrandt1 · 13/11/2025 10:13

Absolutely fine! Can’t believe the snobby responses. The one we know is extraordinarily clever now doing a stem degree at a RG university.

What makes it have "negative associations" ?
Just out of curiosity.

As others have pointed out with the “K” spelling it has the Kardashianesque “yoonique” thing going on which is often beloved by parents who struggle with a lot of aspects of parenting.

Anyone who has worked in education will tell you that at any point in time, certain names will be disproportionately represented among the most challenging children. When I was at a huge secondary school as a pupil it was Darrens, Lees, Donnas, Scotts, Karens and Charmaines. In the last decade or so it’s been yoonique spellings; non traditional K and J names; and first names that sound like surnames, I think the latter is an American import and it’s been common there for a long time. 20 years ago Jayden, Jordan (both sexes) and Jade had similar connotations where I was living and working then.

There will be lovely children with those names and lovely parents who think they are nice names and opt for them, but they are definitely over represented amongst the most challenging children and the most challenging and challenged parents. It’s pretty weird as obviously they don’t collude to choose those names.

Are you British? US naming culture is very different so the same connotations may well not apply.

Needmorelego · 13/11/2025 10:46

@LightDrizzle yes I am British.
Personally I think anyone who judges a child for having a name starting with K or J is just a bit pathetic.
If I heard the name Kodie/Cody I wouldn't bat an eyelid.
Kodie is an usual spelling but Cody is a perfectly ordinary name.

lostintranslation148 · 13/11/2025 10:50

What would you call your dd a boys name? It just makes it seem like you wanted a boy really.

Timeforabitofpeace · 13/11/2025 11:10

I don’t like it and the addition of the K instead of C makes it sound worse.

Oh I like Kendall. I knew one at university and it suited her.

Anne Margaret/Margaret Anne is much nicer.

Noooo, not Margaret, not for a baby/child. Not even that great for a grown woman now. Very frumpy. It's like Mary. 😖

WaltzingWaters · 13/11/2025 11:34

Cody for a boy I like.
Kodie for a girl, sorry but definitely not.

How about Cadi?

Both Cody's I have known are girls.

Only suggested it because they are the other names that Op suggested using.

Cody is a boy’s name. I’m not sure Kodie is a name

Violetparis · 13/11/2025 16:41

I don’t judge a child, or even the parents, I responded to your request as to why it has negative associations and I gave an answer based on observation.

Yes but these so called negative associations are just made up nonsense in people's heads.
I still have no clue why anyone would have a negative associations with the name Kodie/Cody unless it was something personal like a horrible ex or bully from school.

flindorama · 13/11/2025 22:53

I taught a Kody at secondary school in Scotland. She was an absolute delight. Lovely, well mannered, pretty awesome teenager. So if you really like it, go for it. It doesn't matter what people on here think really. Don't let them put you off.
