The name Bria

Just looking for thoughts on this name? I really like it but unsure of the nickname, don’t know if I’d like people shortening it to Brie?

Have always loved the name Freya but it’s the 3rd most popular name where I live, although I don’t know how many babies that actually amounts to!

A woman I work with has a daughter called Breia, might be worth considering that spelling?

muddyford · 11/11/2025 06:22

How about Bryher? It's one of the Scilly islands.

CurlewKate · 11/11/2025 06:27

I’d have to ask how to pronounce both Breia and Bryher. Which would be tedious for her. At least most people would get Bria right. But yes, she’d
probably be Bree to her friends. Go for Freya. It’s lovely. Incidentally-how can you look up the use of names in your area? That sounds fun!

Bergenquest · 11/11/2025 06:37

Yes definitely some provocation issues with it. I was saying it like Bree-uh.

Pretty much everyone is familiar with Freya. Also knew such a cool girl with the name so it’s a cool name to me now!

National records of Scotland has an interactive map, not sure about UK wide though :) x

Pronunciation, I meant!

Yes, you risk her friends once older shortening Bria to Brie, as lots of names get shortened to the first syllable, but is that really a big deal if you love the name? (Okay it’s a cheese, but it doesn’t seem to have done Brie Larson any harm).

In terms of Freya though I personally wouldn’t let something like popularity put you off - even if it’s the third most popular girls name in your area, the overall much wider spread of names now means it would still be quite unlucky to get another in her class (although obviously there may be several over the whole school if it’s been especially popular in your area for a while).

If it’s the “aya” sound you like though and Freya is definitely a no go, have you maybe considered rarer Linnea or Theia?

ThunderFog · 11/11/2025 06:49

It makes me think "lively", "breezy", and "free".
Possible confusion with Pria.
I've never heard Kia, Fia, Lia, Mia, Nia, Pia, Ria or Tia reduced to one syllable I don't think. Often doubled eg Mimi or lengthened humorously eg Kianissimo round here.

UptoYou · 11/11/2025 08:43

If you are in Scotland it might be worth considering that the Gaelic word for "pretty" is brèagha (pronounced Brie-a)

TappyGilmore · 11/11/2025 08:48

Never heard of Bria before but I like it, it’s pretty and it’s unusual without being crazy.

I don’t like Freya at all, just not my style, but incredibly popular these days.

lostintranslation148 · 11/11/2025 08:50

I like Briar, never heard of Bria - is it Bree-ah? It makes me think of cheese but does sound pretty.

Pranksters · 11/11/2025 12:34

I really like it. It will get shortened though.

Freya is just a bit boring now.

ShaneWalshgirlfriend · 11/11/2025 12:39

I like the idea... but did make me think of an uncomfortable bra.

Dee51121 · 11/11/2025 13:09

I know a Breagha, pronounced Bree-ah

LovelyUser · 11/11/2025 14:36

I’d have to ask how to pronounce both Breia and Bryher. Bree-ah and Brigh-uh

JillyGiraffe · 12/11/2025 19:07

Oh gosh, all these spellings of Bria! Very confusing! If I heard the name I’d assume it’s spelt Bria if that helps, and I would imagine the nickname is Bree… BUT my children have very obvious nicknames and to us, family and friends they always go by their full names.

100% agree with this.

purpleme12 · 12/11/2025 19:41

Not that keen really

Prefer Brianna

RaraRachael · 12/11/2025 19:47

I'd pronounce it as Bree-ah but it's too close to Brie for my liking.

schoolsoutforever · 12/11/2025 21:00

I know a teenage Bria - it's a lovely name and though unusual doesn't seem way out at all.

ladygindiva · 12/11/2025 21:58

I know a Brenna which I think is a gorgeous name

GalaxyStars · 12/11/2025 22:07

I know a 12 year old Bria, it’s a lovely name and nobody has shortened it yet. Go for it 😊

Peternell · 13/11/2025 00:21

I really like Bria, though I wasn't sure before I read this thread whether it was pronounced like Briar or Bree-ah. I also like Freya, but I get that popularity can be a tricky issue.

Bergenquest · 13/11/2025 04:22

I’m so torn! Thinking I’ll need to wait and see what she looks like.
