Is Disney a silly name?

I think it is. I'd be mortified if I was named that.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MrsSkylerWhite · 11/11/2025 14:41

Yes it is a bit silly.

Tillow4ever · 11/11/2025 15:11

Not great but I’ve heard worse…. Someone I know called their daughter “Selfie”…

chalkpaint · 11/11/2025 15:20

Yeah it’s terrible I have someone on my Facebook who’s named their daughter that too. They have an awful double barrelled surname too that makes it sound even worse !

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/11/2025 15:30

You can guarantee both parents would be “Disney Parents”.

It's a brand not a name? 😂

It's a brand not a name? 😂

It's a brand named after it's founder Mr Walter Disney.
So it is technically a name.

It’s a surname. Walt was happy with it.

As I said earlier in the thread the family name was actually d"Isigny.
A french name meaning "from Isigny" (a place in France).
The family anglicised it presumably when they settled in the USA.

Shufflebumnessie · 11/11/2025 15:57

Our cat is called Disney, because we found him (& his mother & 3 siblings) in our garden on the return from a trip to Disneyworld.
I, personally, wouldn't call a child Disney.

chalkpaint · 11/11/2025 20:34

@GuyForksAndKniveshope so it means less people inflicted the name on their kid 😂
I do love it for pets though it’s really cute for a little kitty 🐈‍⬛

I prefer more out there names for pets. I don't want a cat called a common child's name like Callum or Olivia, a cat should be called things like Agamemnon or Boudica.

VioletMatilda · 12/11/2025 11:48

There were 20 people named "Disney" in Scotland in the 1901 census, presumably because it was their mother, or another relative's surname.

As a middle name, with the explanation that it's a family name? Not silly.
As a first name with no explanation? Silly.

@chalkpaint The name isn't anything to do with the characters from Bread and one character from Top Cat is it?

There is a village a few miles from me in Lincolnshire called Norton Disney, named after the D'Isney family who had vast land holdings thereabouts in the middle ages. I believe Walt visited many years ago to explore his roots in the area. So it had been anglicised centuries ago, like plenty of family and place names.

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/11/2025 12:27

Actually he came in 1949, and there is a home movie showing him and his family meeting the vicar, looking round the village etc. He used the village crest for Sleeping Beauty.

To be honest I wasn't sure if it was his particular branch of the family that changed the name.
That's a lovely thing about the village crest.

I'd just have Tommy Roe going around in my head every time somebody mentioned the child's name:

Disney
I'm so Disney, my head is spinning
Like a whirlpool, it never ends

CeciliaMars · 12/11/2025 15:09

Yes.
