Hi all, baby boy due this Christmas.

Top 2 are William and Ambrose, just can’t decide which!

William. Ambrose would a niche choice.

Marylou2 · 07/11/2025 22:17

Is there a reason you're considering Ambrose? Thinking extremely wealthy grandpa with the same name who would be devoted to mini Ambrose? If not, then virtually any other name.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 07/11/2025 22:22

William

ilovepixie · 07/11/2025 22:22

Ambrose reminds me of custard.

Username2167 · 07/11/2025 22:28

Ambrose.

But I’m biased because it’s DS middle name!

I wanted it for his first name but bottled it, sometimes wish I’d stuck with it.

Mandarinaduck · 07/11/2025 22:29

Ambrose is a nice name in itself but I think it sounds slightly effeminate (as well as very posh which can be good or bad depending on what you are going for). It could work fine as a middle name. William is a versatile, classic name, easy to carry off and good for a child and a man.

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/11/2025 22:38

Definitely William for me!

Zoono · 07/11/2025 22:52

William is nice but Ambrose sounds very posh. I live in a pretty deprived city , where I can't imagine anyone naming their child, Ambrose. I think it would only work as a good name, if you live in a posh/ affluent area

ArtSandwich · 07/11/2025 22:54

Are you expecting a 70 year old farmer from the West Country with bailer twine holding up their trousers?

If not, William.

Edited

Ambrose isn’t posh. It’s yokel.

Redwinedaze · 07/11/2025 22:55

Will or Rose. I prefer Will. Also think of custard however children tend to own their names, as in people just call them by their name and any association gets pushed aside so go with the name you like best.

ThatsNotAKnife · 07/11/2025 22:57

Ambrose.
There's a lovely veteran runner in our group with the name. He's a bit posh, sprightly and ever so chatty. He's dead nice.

Tiebiter · 07/11/2025 22:57

I think of rice pudding. But I do like rice pudding. Agree Ambrose is a yokel name.

Zitroneneis · 07/11/2025 23:06

Ambrose - such a cool and memorable name!

William will get called Willy. It’s literally in the name!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/11/2025 06:26

My DB is Ambrose. Neither posh nor yokel!! He shut down the custard comments very early on.

TheLongNow · 08/11/2025 06:28

Ambrose was always my top choice but never got to use it.

But he did get them

Almost any name can be teased, even popular ones. Horrid Henry, Willy William etc etc so I don’t see how a potential custard association is any worse?

olympicsrock · 08/11/2025 08:12

Either are fine. Ambrose is a bit love it or hate it . William is nice but very middle of the road. He will be known as William Initial of Surname eg William B as at least one other in the class. ( or Will/ wills / Bill / Billy )

HouseFullOfChaos · 08/11/2025 08:48

In South Manchester, Ambrose is the name of a boys grammar school. It'd be pretty weird if they ever came to live in that town with the name Ambrose.

Would you shorten it to anything? I can't think of what you could shorten it to. Ammy? Bro? Rose?

BoleynMemories13 · 08/11/2025 11:56

William, 100%

Billy is lovely for a young boy, Will for a cool teen/young adult. Bill when he's a old man. It's so versatile.

Ambrose is very limited in comparison, and I agree it's a very niche taste.

HugoYorway · 08/11/2025 12:51

Ambrose is dreadful.

singswithitsfingers · 08/11/2025 13:18

Are you Catholic? Ambrose quite a Catholic name. William very solid choice - royal names never go out of fashion.

Zov · 08/11/2025 13:25

HugoYorway · 08/11/2025 12:51

Ambrose is dreadful.

I second this sorry @BlueWhiteGreen The image it conjours up for me is custard, or some kind of food - like rice or something.

Just no. William is much better. So much mileage with this name too... William as a child, Billy when he's a little bit older, then Will as a young man, then Bill when he's middle aged and older.

FlatPat · 08/11/2025 13:26

I love both but I really love Ambrose.
