Genny/Jenny

Morning.

I really love the Genevieve but whenever I’ve discussed it with anyone they say, ‘she’ll just end up as Genny’. I don’t disagree, not many people with long names actually get their whole name, but is Genny/Jenny a bit dated?

thanks

Gen or Viv will be her nickname
Both lovely

MyAcornWood · 07/11/2025 08:44

I don’t actually love Jenny (and hate Genny, as everyone calls a generator that around here 😂) but I don’t think it’s dated exactly? Jen is lovely, imo, and Eve/Evie, Vivi works, or Ginny which is lovely. I’ve met a couple of little Ginnys recently. One ‘just’ Ginny and one Genevieve / Ginny.

Coffeeishot · 07/11/2025 08:44

She would get the name you call her. You don't have to shorten it to Genny/Jenny if you don't want to, I don't think it is outdated because it would be a nickname.

SemmaLina · 07/11/2025 08:46

The only Genevieve I know is known as Evie
My Dd Jennifer is known as … Jennifer

Not dated , classic 👍

Coffeeishot · 07/11/2025 08:46

Gen or ginny is nice. As an aside not everyone with a long names likes the shortening of it, I have a long name and don't purposely shorten but. Others do and I hate it.

ButtonMushrooms · 07/11/2025 08:48

I love Jenny / Jen / Ginny and I don't think they are dated.

Onefortheroad25 · 07/11/2025 08:57

I absolutely love the name Genevieve, only ever met one and her name was never shortened. Not that I know of anyway. It’s a beautiful classy name.
Never heard of anyone being called Genny.

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/11/2025 09:23

I love the name Jenny! I think it’s gorgeous for a little one. However I think people will assume it’s short for Jennifer so she’ll have to correct them.

Genevieve has lots of nn options but they’re all similar in that they’re commonly used nn’s for other names, e.g. Evie, Vivi, Ginny etc so people will assume her name is something different, if that bothers you?

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 07/11/2025 09:28

The only Genevieve I know is just Genevieve, but if you impose Ginny from the start, it's unlikely to change to Jenny. Jennifer seems to be coming back in though, so Jenny wouldn't feel dated.

Vivi is nice too

I don't know why the PP thinks she'll be Jen or Viv, unless she's going to time travel to an 80 call centre.

Duckies · 07/11/2025 09:46

I think Jenny is lovely for a little girl. She may want to revert to the full name when older or yes, you may have a Jenny forever. I have a child who says she'll never use her 'long' name.

Ginny signals that her full name is Genevieve (which is also lovely) but I think it sounds harsh.

I also worked with a Genevieve and she just went by that.

ResusciAnnie · 07/11/2025 09:54

Literally never seen ‘Genny’ in my life! I like Genevieve in full, or Vivi (vee vee not vivvy). Or Ginny actually. I know a Ginny but would assume she’s a Virginia. Maybe she’s a Genevieve!

From experience, you absolutely can choose which shortening your kid will go by (or not). Decide beforehand and stick to your guns. DS exclusively goes by a shortening of a name that is usually shortened to something else. Literally never had an issue.

BooksAndHooks · 07/11/2025 09:58

The one I know is shortened to Evie never Gen / Genny

ILoveLucite · 07/11/2025 10:09

I have a Genevieve and her name is shortened to Ginnny. Nobody every really tries to call her Gen/Jenny

Livingonbananabread · 07/11/2025 10:27

I love Genevieve on its own. I was at school with one who went by Genny, which used to slightly annoy her as when teachers were telling her off they would try to do the full name thing and call her Jennifer, which wasn’t her name at all.

The only other one I know (also an adult now) goes by Evie, which I do love but is very well used now for other names.

Haven’t come across Ginny/Jinny as a nickname for Genevieve, though it works - those I know are Virginia or Jane.

Topseyt123 · 07/11/2025 11:30

I like the name and am fine with all of its regular derivatives. However, I would want Jenny to be spelt as Jenny, not Genny. Genny is just wrong, to me anyway. 😃

DuchessOfNarcissex · 07/11/2025 11:31

Jenny short for Jennifer is nice. I don't like Genevieve or Genny but Ginny is ok.
Vivi is awful.

Soozikinzii · 07/11/2025 11:42

Genevieve is a beautiful name - my DHs favourite by the way - we have 6 boys ! Ultimately it will be up to her if its shortened wont it - the same as any name but I really think you should go for it !

GoBackToTheStart · 07/11/2025 12:27

The one I know gets Gen, Viv, Vivvi, Genie and Ginny from different people. Mainly Gen, but never Genny.

CubanPete · 07/11/2025 16:54

I’d agree that Jenny is dated however you can always call her by her full name, Evie, Viv, or Vivi - so I wouldn’t let that put me off the game.
