Opinions on Ada?

Ada was a firm favourite for my partner and me - even before we were expecting.

However, my nanna is appalled by this and has expressed that she just thinks of a little old lady - she sees nothing nice about the name at all.

This has naturally caused me to second guess myself and the name.

What's everyone’s opinion? Too old fashioned?

Team Nanna here, but I'm probably of a similar vintage.

I much prefer Ava to Ada.

However, it's your baby so don't allow anyone else's opinions to influence your choice.

Ada was my girl name and I still love it ( after my nana Ada). I would have had Ada Rose. I had 4 boys though 😊

Notmymarmosets · 04/11/2025 23:49

I love it.

OSTMusTisNT · 05/11/2025 00:06

I think it's passed the little old lady stage, Ada was an old ladies name 20+ years ago which makes it perfectly on trend for a baby name now.

Best not to ask the opinion of anyone apart from those in the same generation as you.

I had a selection of 'fake' baby names to let elderly relatives feel they were part of the conversation and never mentioned the real ones we were considering. Vaguely remember Reece, Dale and Brian were on the fake list 😂.

I love Ada! Also love Ida.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 05/11/2025 00:12

Well granny names are in, which is probably weird for people of her vintage.

It's popular but always sounds a bit hard to me - I prefer Ida

Love it
Ada Lovelace was the first person to write a computer program, a brilliant mathematician and worked with Charles Babbage who designed one of the early computers
A brilliant woman and one to aspire towards

I came to say this. A fine name.

APurpleSquirrel · 05/11/2025 01:36

Ada was our girl name when I was last pregnant but we had a boy instead. Loved it then, still do. Ada Lovelace was the inspiration.
old lady names are definitely in.

Seymour5 · 05/11/2025 02:32

Teen DGD is Ada. It suits her.

JakeyRolling · 05/11/2025 02:34

Love it! Was definitely on my list but DH vetoed.

Like others, ADA Lovelace was the inspiration

CanadianCooper · 05/11/2025 02:53

Also came to mention Ada Lovelace. Strong name. Not for me as I don’t think it’s a Perry name. But I don’t like Ava either.

CanadianCooper · 05/11/2025 03:30

*pretty

LattePatty · 05/11/2025 06:38

Love the name Ada and the Ada Lovelace association helps

sashh · 05/11/2025 06:41

Fantastic name, shared with the first computer programmer. I see we have a mini Lovelace fan convention going on.

Firsttimebabymummy · 05/11/2025 06:46

Love Ada!

ResusciAnnie · 05/11/2025 06:46

I’m sure we’ll be thinking (maybe not saying!) the same thing when our (great) grandchildren are called Keith and Lynn.

I personally like Ada and think it’s stronger and fresher than Ava. But you’re never going to please everyone.

heartsinvisiblefury · 05/11/2025 07:10

Love it !

Harassedmum123 · 05/11/2025 07:12

I like it but I didn’t have my lenses in when I read it and misread it as Asda! Ava is prettier but there are a lot of children called Ava in my dc class at school.

zazazaaar · 05/11/2025 07:13

Has she not been noticing that for the last 25 years people have been calling their kids names of this generation? Its hardly new!

dailyconniptions · 05/11/2025 07:48

It's a geriatric name to me I'm afraid.

HugoYorway · 05/11/2025 08:35

I don't like it at all, but it is better than Ava.

2chocolateoranges · 05/11/2025 08:37

I know a 7yr old Ada and an 8yr old Ayda. Both pronounced the same.

HugoYorway · 05/11/2025 08:39

Ayda is horrible.

Cat1504 · 05/11/2025 08:42

I know of 2 Adas ….but spelt Aada
