Sophie or Charlotte

Really can't decide between these 2 names. My worry with Sophie is the popularity of Sophia/possibility of getting mixed up with Sophia

Both sound OK with surname

Both are nice. Would they get shortened?

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/11/2025 17:06

Both are lovely but I just prefer the softer sound of Sophie. Also, Charlotte could become Charlie or Lottie - neither of which I’m a huge fan of.

I would prefer them not to be. I don't mind Lottie but not keen on Charlie which is the only thing putting me off Charlotte

I have a Sophia and honestly my gran kept calling her Sophie I was like 😳 then her dad said we can call her Sophie if you want I was like no her names Sophia 😂 she always gets call Soph by everyone now lol but I do like Lottie for Charlotte it’s so pretty xx

I'm not a fan of either.
I particularly dislike Charlotte and there are no less than TWELVE Charlottes in my teen's year group. For that reason I'd choose Sophie.

Emanwenym · 04/11/2025 17:41

@Babyname96 You don't have a lot of control over what they choose to call themselves once they are old enough to do so. I don't like Charlie for a girl either. Charl (pron. Sharl) is OK. Most of the Charlottes I know are Charlotte.

I would have been happy to call a DD Sophie. Both your names had already been used by cousins.

Sophie

But my reasons for not liking Charlotte are really personal!

LamourdesTrois · 04/11/2025 19:41

I have a 20 year old Charlotte and she is just Charlotte - not Charlie or Lottie. I like the name Sophie, but I think Charlotte is more elegant.

Zitroneneis · 04/11/2025 19:54

Both very popular, especially Sophie.

If you have a common surname, she might end up one of many (which has advantages but also disadvantages)

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 04/11/2025 19:55

Both lovely, but both popular if that bothers you.

sanityisamyth · 04/11/2025 19:55

Charlotte. Sophie sounds wet.

Enko · 04/11/2025 19:58

I dont loke either but at a push Sophie. I actually prefer Sophia if forced in that direction. Charlotte to me is on par with Jane and Anne in utter dullness.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 04/11/2025 20:16

Both are absolutely lovely classic names. I would struggle to choose but I'd probably go for Charlotte.

jubileewonders · 04/11/2025 21:06

I have a Sofie often shortened to Sof - I love the name and also the spelling

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 04/11/2025 22:00

I love lottie

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 04/11/2025 22:11

I love Charlotte, I like Sophie - but I think the mega popularity of Sophia has left it a bit tired

thaisweetchill · 04/11/2025 22:14

I’m a Sophie and I’ve never once been called Sophia…

Caleb64 · 04/11/2025 22:15

Sophie

Emanwenym · 04/11/2025 22:17

@thaisweetchill, There probably aren't many Sophias your age.
There are thousands and thousands of them now.

Normandy144 · 04/11/2025 22:23

I prefer Charlotte as I have one. She's only ever been Charlotte and doesn't want to be Lottie or Charlie. We have been very relaxed about shortened versions although we've never used them ourselves, but she is adamant it's Charlotte and nothing else. You can't predict how it will turn out.

Theonlyfatmiddleagedwomannotonmonjaro · 04/11/2025 22:31

I have both and an Emilly.

Sophie is known as Fifi, Charlotte as Lottie and Emily is Milly.
