Mathis for a boy?

I love the name Mathis for a boy, it's popular in France where I'm from (pronounced 'Mattis' without the 'th' sound) but my husband does not like it and says the boy will get bullied at school in the UK for having a strange name. Is this true do you think?

he will be called Johnny surely

I quite liked this one. Wasn't there a Mathis in the last James Bond film. I was pregnant when i was watching it and thought it was nice. DH wasn't keen though.
I don't think it's a name that would attract bullies. It's nice.

What about Matthias, or Mateus as a compromise?

SoupKitchen · 06/06/2008 13:19

exactly my thoughts ladyt, but wasn't sure of the spelling

LadyThompson · 06/06/2008 13:26

One is the German version, the other the Portuguese.

I like it but I can see it will be mispronounced.

What about Matthias, Mattias, Mateus? Also knew a very cute Moritz once.

I'm sorry I'm with your dh on this. I have a (French) nephew with this name and I really hate it. I prefer Matthew or Matthias

SSSandy2 · 07/06/2008 14:43

I knew this absolutely stunning looking boy called Matthew when I was at school. He was GORGEOUS, so maybe that's why I like the name! I had it mind for my baby if I happened to have a boy which I didn't. Dh was all doubtful about the "th" thing to, going on that people would be spitting all over the place tryingto pronounce it!

colacubes · 07/06/2008 14:59

A boy at my ds school called Mateus, good name, not name called at all! Cant see why mathis would either, not as if you are calling him sheila!

dizzydixies · 07/06/2008 22:04

Matteo?

bluenosesaint · 07/06/2008 22:24

I really like it (and pronounced it in my head the 'right' way despite being unfamiliar with it)

Would probably get shortened to Matt or Matty at school anyway

AbbeyA · 07/06/2008 22:32

Couldn't you just have Matthew? (much nicer and will end up with the same nick name).
