Thoughts on seasons for names….

Very very early days. Don’t even know the sex of baby but;

What’s your take on seasons used as first names? Ie
Winter (for a boy)
Autumn (for a girl)
Summer (for a girl)

and the connotations for each name?

thank you

I know Summer is very popular and I quite like it but I heard a little girl called Winter the other day and it really suited her.

Onesipmore · 30/10/2025 11:32

For girls its OK. I couldn't saddle a boy with the name Winter tbh. Maybe cute for a little baby, but not as an adult

DuchessOfNarcissex · 30/10/2025 11:56

They're not very classy. Winter for a boy is awful.

RuthW · 30/10/2025 12:12

I like them for girls. Winter is a girl’s name.

BoleynMemories13 · 30/10/2025 12:14

I've only known Winter to be used for girls. I don't like it for either, but definitely not for a boy.

Summer is pretty enough. I'm not mad on seasonal names, but see it as no different to month names (April, May, June).

I'm not a fan of Autumn, as I don't find it particularly pretty, but have heard it often enough now to accept it as a name. Winter really isn't for me though. It just sounds so cold (pardon the pun 😂 ).

Funny how Spring has never caught on. It's weird where some people draw the line. If Winter is acceptable as a name (for some), why not Spring?

spanieleyes · 30/10/2025 12:16

Depends when they are born! Autumn and Summer are fine for girls, Winter is ok but more as a girls name. Spring is definitely out!

Darlyrey · 30/10/2025 12:38

Thanks for the feedback. I know a little boy called Winter so assumed it was a boys name but I like it for a girl!

Genuinely interested to know what you mean by ‘classy’? What names do you consider classy?

im guessing our tastes are different and perception is different x

@BoleynMemories13 , May is a diminutive of Mary as well as a month's name.

I don't really like seasonal names. They seem a bit like they've been chosen for a reason not because the parents liked the name.
The non-obvious ones like Carol or Holly are not too bad, but I wouldn't want to be a Noella, April or Winter.

dagoo · 30/10/2025 12:40

I love Winter

DuchessOfNarcissex · 30/10/2025 12:57

@Darlyrey I don't like names that are nouns or adjectives.

Fifthtimelucky · 30/10/2025 13:48

The only Winter I have ever known was female so I also think of that as a girl’s name.

Personally, I don’t like any season names or month names. I used to know a May who was born in May, which was fair enough, but I also used to know a June who wasn’t born in June, which I thought was odd.

I have no objection to names with seasonal connotations though. For example I know a Robin who was born very close to Christmas, which I thought was a nice nod to the season - and I think names like Holly, Ivy, Carol and Noel are also fine (though necessarily to my taste). Similarly I have no problem with names like Dawn or Eve for babies born at those times of day.

Mauvehoodie · 30/10/2025 14:00

I really like Autumn and Winter as names but only for a girl.

noramoo · 30/10/2025 14:28

I like them all OP, possibly a bit less keen on Autumn as it doesn't sound as much like a name to me for some reason

Very interesting as I’m the opposite!

Interesting opinions! Personally I absolutely love seasons as names and the feedback which is a little negative hadn’t put me off.
i don’t think these choices I’ve suggested are too divisive

Poor Spring never gets chosen though. 😂

Wardrobemarker · 30/10/2025 14:48

Edited

I can guarantee very very few people who pick May do it to honour their Great Granny Mary though. May is a name in it's own right and 99.9% of people will associate it with the month of the exact same name, rather than the name Mary.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 30/10/2025 15:26

@BoleynMemories13 , I think they're using it because they like it, not necessarily because of the meaning or month.

DPotter · 30/10/2025 15:29

knew a little girl called Summer whose birthday was in April - felt wrong somehow

RandomUsernameHere · 30/10/2025 15:30

I like Winter, the other two sound very weak.

purpleygrey · 30/10/2025 15:31

I know a girl called Wynter. (Yes, spelt like that) born in August !

I also know a girl whose name doesn't match the season she was born in, but does match the season she was conceived in.

If Summer was born in April, assuming she wasn't premature, she'd have been conceived in July.

This is true - hadn't thought of that
