Thoughts on seasons for names….

Very very early days. Don’t even know the sex of baby but;

What’s your take on seasons used as first names? Ie
Winter (for a boy)
Autumn (for a girl)
Summer (for a girl)

and the connotations for each name?

thank you

I don’t like them. I don’t like names that end in “er”, I live in a common part of London and the pronunciation is always awful … “Wintaaaa” 🤪

JudgeBread · 30/10/2025 16:07

I don't like them. They always seem a bit... Harry Potter fanfic. Here's my OC, Slytherin prefect Winter Wildsmith. Her patronus is an arctic fox.

Just what comes to mind 🙃

LeopardsANeutral · 30/10/2025 16:09

I absolutely love Winter! But I see it as a girls name, it wouldn't seem right (to me) on a boy. We would've called DD Winter, but it didn't sound right with the surname. I like Autumn for a girl too. I don't particularly like Summer as much, but it's inoffensive.

@BoleynMemories13 , I think they're using it because they like it, not necessarily because of the meaning or month.

That may be (ooh, see what I did there? 😎 )

I said people are much more likely to associate it with the month, rather than the name Mary. I didn't say people were picking it because of the month.

@Darlyrey I don't like names that are nouns or adjectives.

Errrrrm I hate to break it to you, all names are nouns 🤣

DuchessOfNarcissex · 30/10/2025 16:30

@HollyGolightly4 ,I don't believe you hate to do it. You're doing it with glee.

HollyGolightly4 · 30/10/2025 16:32

Fair point @DuchessOfNarcissex!

Hussaini · 30/10/2025 16:41

I only like summer

I've only known Winter to be used for girls. I don't like it for either, but definitely not for a boy.

Summer is pretty enough. I'm not mad on seasonal names, but see it as no different to month names (April, May, June).

I'm not a fan of Autumn, as I don't find it particularly pretty, but have heard it often enough now to accept it as a name. Winter really isn't for me though. It just sounds so cold (pardon the pun 😂 ).

Funny how Spring has never caught on. It's weird where some people draw the line. If Winter is acceptable as a name (for some), why not Spring?

Spring could also be the metal coily thing. Like the springs in a mattress. Terrible lol

RightOnTheEdge · 30/10/2025 16:51

I like them all. There is a girl called Winter in my kids' school and she has white-blonde hair and it really suits her.
I think Winter would suit a boy as well.

Definitely terrible. I'm not disagreeing. Any more terrible than Winter (or, shudder, Wynter) though? There's really not much in it imo!

fairycupcakes · 30/10/2025 17:37

I think they are lovely! All girl’s names imo though. I really like Winter ❄️ I know of a little one called Winter Lily and I think that is so lovely!

DuchessOfNarcissex · 30/10/2025 17:41

@fairycupcakes , I think it sounds like a cheap scented candle.

CarpetKnees · 30/10/2025 17:44

I don't like calling people things that are nouns, either.

The 'Wynter-Rose' type names are even worse.

I've never come across a boy called Winter, and my work involved looking at a lot of databases with children's names.

KathyDuck · 30/10/2025 17:45

I know an Autumn and it’s weird saying her name when it’s the height of summer and they’re all in the padding pool.

youalright · 30/10/2025 17:49

I know a few winters all girls

Ah well, we all have different opinions!

Needmorelego · 30/10/2025 17:51

I like Summer.
Autumn and Winter not so much as I associate them with crappy, cold and chilly weather.
I like April/Avril, May or June as names.
There's an actress called January Jones but I think January sounds a bit clunky (and again brrrrr).

schoolsoutforever · 30/10/2025 17:59

I teach a teenage female Winter - it's lovely and suits her. I also like Autumn but not so keen on Summer for some reason. Maybe a bit too American (I guess they all are)

Pjnow · 30/10/2025 17:59

Do people use these names randomly regardless of the season of birth?

I know a June who wasn't born in June and a May who I don't think was born in May 😂

DuchessOfNarcissex · 30/10/2025 18:45

@Pjnow , yes. Noel G. was born in May, Georgia May Jagger in February, Avril Lavigne in September...

So a lot of months were named for people or gods anyway (so modelled after names that were already in existence).

January: Janus
March: Mars
May: Maia
June: Juno
July: Julius
August: Augustus

Orphlids · 30/10/2025 20:07

I really like Autumn. I don’t hear it as much as Summer, but it’s common enough to be generally accepted as a given name now. I like the sound of the word. It is quite a gently and nicely balanced word. I’d expect Autumn to quite an chic, educated woman (I have been proven wrong about this in the past though!).

I don’t like Summer. It’s just the word itself I don’t like. It’s not a pleasant sound to my ears. I find it cumbersome and inelegant. The “um” sound followed by the “er”. Both these sounds are just so clumsy and dull. I’d expect Summer to be from a more working class background than her counterpart Autumn, and I imagine her to be cheerful and practical.

I think I’d be quite delighted to meet a little boy named Winter. I’d assume his parents were quite bohemian.

17caterpillars1mouse · 01/11/2025 16:53

In order of preference for a girl (I actually like all 3)
Autumn
Winter
Summer

I wouldn't call a boy Winter though, I don't think he'd grow to appreciate it as a teenager / adult
