Thoughts on seasons for names….

Very very early days. Don’t even know the sex of baby but;

What’s your take on seasons used as first names? Ie
Winter (for a boy)
Autumn (for a girl)
Summer (for a girl)

and the connotations for each name?

thank you

I like Summer and Autumn but only if the child is born in the correct season, otherwise it’s silly. Also would think of Winter as a girls name but I don’t really like it as a name .

Poor Spring never gets chosen though. 😂

True! But I know two Chinese women who chose Spring as their English name- it's used a lot in Chinese as a given name.

In English maybe it's overlooked because it's also a verb, or has other meanings as a noun?

Surely because of the different hemispheres you can always get away with it!

Thanks for all the feedback. Pleased that some people like the names.
noted ….winter being a girls name and not a boys name.

Laverne or Verna for a girl; Vernon for a boy mean the seasonal kind of spring.

I find Summer amusing for an arithmetically inclined child. I like the sound of "November" but overall I'm coming round to the idea that names which are unmistakably names are strongest. Names of seasons are used so commonly like "Summer Sale"/ "Autumn Savings"/ "Winter Bargains" that it could be quite annoying if that was your name.

Not a fan of Spring as a season?!

Winter (for a boy) - a dark and brooding person, very silly name for a boy too, I think they would struggle with that name unless they were super confident and can take a joke, or live in an area or community where unusual names are more the norm.

Autumn (for a girl) - a beautiful time of the year, less joyful a person than Summer.

Summer (for a girl) - I'm not normally a fan of nature names, I find them a bit silly (except a couple of the flowers), but I really like Summer, I've known a couple. You'd imagine a warm, bright and joyful person, I can't help but smile when I say the name.

I LOVE Autumn for a girl and it was on my very, very short list. For a while, it was THE name whilst pregnant with first (boy).
Summer - not for me, I know quite a few and find it a bit Home and Away
Winter - I prefer it as a feminine name. Weirdly, I prefer the very old spelling of Wynter. Usually I'm all for using the most obvious spelling, but not in this case.

I also know a girl whose name doesn't match the season she was born in, but does match the season she was conceived in.

If Summer was born in April, assuming she wasn't premature, she'd have been conceived in July.

Those kids are going to love being reminded about that 😂 Ditto those names after the place they were conceived in.

ResusciAnnie · 09/11/2025 07:33

To me, the names April, May and June are so far removed from the actual months I don’t even think of them as month names tbh! I know kids called April and May (and Junie) and I wouldn’t expect their bdays are in those months. In fact I think it’s weirder to call them after the month they were born - like you couldn’t be bothered to think of a name 😆
Summer, Autumn and Winter are to me all quite girly but there’s no reason any of them would be gendered at all. I like Winnie for short :)
I like Wednesday and Sunday too. My friend nearly called her kid Wednesday (10 years ago). I think some celeb has a Tuesday?

I cannot stress enough that you are naming a baby, a teenager, a young professional or a refuse collector, a middle aged accountant and an old person in a retirement home. What is gorgeous for a baby may not suit all the other stages.

I've only known Winter to be used for girls. I don't like it for either, but definitely not for a boy.

Summer is pretty enough. I'm not mad on seasonal names, but see it as no different to month names (April, May, June).

I'm not a fan of Autumn, as I don't find it particularly pretty, but have heard it often enough now to accept it as a name. Winter really isn't for me though. It just sounds so cold (pardon the pun 😂 ).

Funny how Spring has never caught on. It's weird where some people draw the line. If Winter is acceptable as a name (for some), why not Spring?

Because Spring has other meanings perhaps?

I was being facetious. We all have our own line on what counts as a ridiculous name. That was kind of my point. How ridiculous is too ridiculous?

Peternell · 10/11/2025 02:13

I think the season names are all lovely, but they sound like girl names only to me. There was an actress, 1930s and 40s, named Spring Byington, which sounds rather cool for the person who can carry it off!
