It’s horrendously dated in France.

Possibly, but unless OP lives in France that’s not really relevant.

The top 100 baby names in France include Sarah, Paul, Martin and Diane - not sure you’d find many of those in UK baby groups as they sound dated here.

Different countries have different views in what is dated,

Betsy spelled this way. My DD has it short for Elisabeth though.

Personally, I think Sylvie is lovely, but they're all very sweet.
However, and I realise I am completely missing the point of this board, it really shouldn't matter what opinions I and other MN posters have, only you and your partner's opinions count.
I would say maybe wait till you meet your baby girl and then decide, but please let it be yours and your partner's choice, not random internet strangers, however well-meaning! Also, I would strongly advise avoiding asking any friends or family for their thoughts before you decide as they can try to prejudice you while you are still unsure. Just present your lovely baby with the name already decided upon and there's nothing anyone can do so they're more likely to keep negative thoughts to themselves. No matter how nice a name is, there will always be someone who hates it, usually for some personal or entirely arbitrary reason like they went to school with someone with that name who was horrible, which should have no bearing on you using it for your precious girl! Wishing you all the very best and congratulations on your impending bundle of joy!

@Everlore , I agree. Someone in my family has just named a baby (not a DGC) and I don't like it. I'm not going to say anything. The name is twee and very popular. It's also too close to another relative's name.
It's the sort of name where the baby will always be Name Surname, and the combination is quite ordinary, and the middle name dated.

If it was a DGC, I'd mention it.

Frankly, any of them but Marnie

DuchessOfNarcissex · 28/10/2025 22:10

@OneWildandWonderfulLife , it makes me think of Tippi Hedren.
