Baby is a girl! Vaila or Aila? Scottish names

Hi looking for some help with a name for a baby girl.

Vaila - Vay-lah, the name of a Scottish island
Aila - ay-lah (like Layla without the first L)

I know they are so similar but we can’t decide and need some opinions! Or suggestions!

Aila

WilmaDickshow · 26/10/2025 07:53

Vaila

Both are lovely but Aila sounds like Laila with the L being forgotten .

Aila is too close to “ailing” feeling unwell.

Vaila is pretty and unusual without being too out there.

estellacandance · 26/10/2025 08:33

vaila is certainly more unusual.

id choose because aila will often be pronounced eye- la

fourelementary · 26/10/2025 08:34

I nearly chose Vaila for our dd as we’ve friends in Shetland. It’s lovely.

WaltzingWaters · 26/10/2025 08:35

Aila

TheGriffle · 26/10/2025 08:36

I prefer Vaila, I’ve not heard it before but it sounds very pretty and more complete than Aila.

I love both! We have young kids (also in Scotland) and know a couple of each. Personally slightly prefer Vaila - Aila although not common itself is a bit similar in sound to lots of other popular little girls names around us at the moment (Ailsa, Isla, Ava, Eilidh, Ellie etc).

localnotail · 26/10/2025 09:16

Isn't Aila how you pronounce Isla? Why not use Isla instead?

Both names are not very pretty tbh. Wail and Aisle (as in supermarket).

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/10/2025 09:17

I think Vaila sounds more interesting. Aila will get Isla/Layla

dailyconniptions · 26/10/2025 09:23

Aila sounds like ailer which reminds me of ailing/ailment. Vaila is the better but not a pretty or pleasant sounding name imo.

UninitendedShark · 26/10/2025 09:24

Vaila

No Isla is said differently. It’s like EYE LA whereas Aila is ay ‘like the end of day’ la

I'm not familiar with either name. I agree that Aila reminds me of ailment. I can also imagine her constantly saying 'Its like Layla without the L'.

I prefer Vaila as its more unusual, but I pronounced it correctly from just reading it. What initials do both names spell out? Its it was VAG, I'd had the rethink.

Chestnutsincoming · 26/10/2025 09:41

@JDM625 surname starts with M

Isla to save a lifetime of spelling issues?

I like Isle as well but will be a lifetime of correcting people - No not Isle of Man, it's Isle as in Isle Malt'!

Don't like Vaila, not sure why but I keep thinking of gas boilers?

Chestnutsincoming · 26/10/2025 09:46

@OSTMusTisNT i say Isla differently to Aila. Not as keen on the Isla sound. X

Just to add, Aila sounds so close to Eilidh I would probably go for the more well known.

Rowena191 · 26/10/2025 09:54

I know an Iona. Beautiful name.

PerkyCyanPoet · 26/10/2025 09:56

I really like both but prefer Vaila!

Ailis and Ailsa are also pretty names 😊 I’m less keen on Isla too.

I like this but always think of ‘I own a’, my brain can’t separate it from the sentence lol

Slightly different is Ilona, although its not Scottish.

Chestnutsincoming · 26/10/2025 10:08

I think after listening to everyone, it’s confirmed I really love the name Aila. The negative comments and things to consider haven’t put me off so it’s solidified my choice. Thank you everyone :)

Same here.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/10/2025 14:59

Aila - though be prepared for it to be misheard as Isla a bit.

Ailsa is a bit more distinct if that's going to bother you.

Vaila sounds Viking.. but not in a great way, more a Brunhilde way, for some reason.
