Just that really.

I’ve read a few old threads on here where associations with Jade Goody were bought up, I’m early twenties and had to google who that even was though so does it still matter?

It’s currently the number 1 baby girls name in France 🇫🇷, but pronounced differently and doesn't have the 'jaded' association there.

I think of Jade Jagger. Jade and Amber seem like hipster baby names from the 1970s.

If you like it @Applebye , use it, but bear in mind that Jude and Jayden are very popular.

Amber is the nicer of the two.

I live here and it took me a while to recognize that they were calling my name when I had an appointment for a Covid jab back in 2021 😂

IfHeWantedToHeWould · 23/10/2025 14:43

I really like it. Kids aren’t going to know who Jade Goody is, but they know Jade from Little Mix.

Emanwenym · 23/10/2025 14:48

@DanceWithYourBalloon , if you imagine being French and your name was Blasée...

I have one of those names when there's a pause before it:
How the neck do I say that??]
'[Wrong pronunciation]'.
I stand up and say 'Emanwenym, call me Eman'

One day, I'll probably stand up to somebody else's name.

To me its a trashy name. The only Jade's I knew growing up were chavvy.

Which is a shame, because it is actually a beautiful name

This was also said a lot on the older Jade threads I read can I ask what exactly the jades you knew did that made them chavvy? I thought it meant council house and violent ,for my sins I spent my entire life savings buying this house and get destroyed every month by the mortgage, and controversial but I don’t mind having a violent daughter if she’s sticking up for herself

I like it. I think it’s due a comeback. 14 year old me would have called my identical twins Jade and Jasmine back in 1994!

showyourquality · 23/10/2025 15:51

The UK is still a pretty classist society. You can absolutely call your dd what you want but it’s obvious reading this thread that the name will be seen by some as fitting into a certain demographic. You get to choose if that bothers you or not.

I think maybe you've misunderstood wht some names are 'naughty girl/boy' ( aka chavvy). It's not because someone gets given the name and is naughty, it's because of the type of parent who names their child that name, who might not bring it up to have certain values.

For example my friend called her child Jayden which I think is an awful 'naughty boy' name. But she is very right on, principled etc etc and he has those values too. Interestingly goes by Jay now he's grown up!

whereisit1 · 23/10/2025 15:57

Yeah not keen sorry

GreyhoundGal1 · 23/10/2025 16:01

I really like the name Jade. The only one in my school was very smart, classy and quiet, so I have good associations. I don't think the current generation of kids will have the same associations as previously because it's not a very popular name now.

Needmorelego · 23/10/2025 16:04

To me Jade is a pretty green gemstone so I like it.
When I was a child in the 80s I knew a girl called Jada and everyone said it was a "fancy" name.
Jade or Jada are both nice to me.

Emanwenym · 23/10/2025 16:10

@Applebye , I thought it meant council house and violent it doesn't.

I don't think the name is trashy, but it's the sort of name that would have appealed to parents who didn't want a more classic name.

I think parents around that time would have chosen Jade but not Laura IYSWIM.

Exactly this, it was the council house parents with loads of kids who effed and blinded.

My friend's older sister Jade tried to persuade me into smoking at 12, and she had a baby by 16. Another Jade (who is lovely) had her first at 17 and now has 4 and has never worked. Etc etc

But this is of course all anecdotal.

Worth saying I'm a rough council estate kid with a hyphenated first name, which is 80's chavvy. And I'm an educated professional in a specialist field :)

I think these days Jade and Jayden are pretty basic names no one bats an eyelid at tbh as loads of jades are on this thread saying they are the opposite of naughty/trashy. Unless it’s something really outlandish like shaniqua-Chantellinia, I don’t think you’ve doomed your child to a lifetime of being assumed to be the mischievous trash boat.

and in all honesty I like names that have a little mischievous feel to them Dennis and Henry I like although I’d never name a child Dennis for personal reasons

I've just mentioned this thread to DP and her sister, saying that both it's funny that both their names have been mentioned, and SIL has just said "Please don't name your kid Jade"

She says while she's always liked the name itself, she hates mens reactions to it. It makes men think she's "easy", and she thinks it puts decent men off.

user2848502016 · 23/10/2025 16:49

I do like it but it is quite 90s

WolfieMuma · 23/10/2025 16:53

It’s soooo 90s.

I don’t dislike it but there are far nicer names

Catwalking · 23/10/2025 17:01

Single syllable names are fairly useless. Much better to be cheering someone on who has a 2 or 3 syllable name.
Just try it out, screaming Jade doesn’t get you anywhere!
If you call Alison or Louisa you’re making a longer series of sounds, & much more likely to find them if lost? etc.

AutumnCosy2025 · 23/10/2025 17:08

Ok. It's never made me first think of Jade Goody because her name is a 'whole' Jade Goody, to me, not Jade.

my first thought was 'No' because I lived in NZ for many years & Jade stone is popular there (or was anyway) & LOT of imitation tourist tat cheapened it. It was really only girls from a certain demographic that were called Jade.

so it would not be a name id have used. Nor Amber.

HOWEVER

These days I might fleetingly think back to that, but I'd mostly just think 'ahh how sweet' if she's a baby/tot and not really think about it at all once she's 2+ (to me is has to be dreadful to think anything at all about their name once they're 2+ and have proper personalities.. 💁🏻‍♀️

I didn't used to like Ruby much, until I knew a baby/toddler called that & it just made it a lovely name to me.

@Ohwhatabeautifulnamechange I'd see it as weeding out the fuckwits quite efficiently!!

Moveoverdarlin · 23/10/2025 17:08

It’s not though. We all make assumptions based on people’s name. Is it judgemental? You bet, but we all still do it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/10/2025 17:10

Its my bosses name and she has resting bitch face so it reminds me of that

WhamBamThankU · 23/10/2025 17:12

It’s quite tacky

Alltheburpees · 23/10/2025 17:14

It always sounds to me like Jane when you’ve got a nasty cold and your nose is bunged up.

Clearinguptheclutter · 23/10/2025 17:17

In the past I would have said a bit chavvy but it would be unusual these days
I wouldn’t think of Jade Goody particularly, litttle Mix Jade more likely

but that all aside I think it’s a bit “meh”

imogena · 23/10/2025 17:18

I’ve known a very lovely Jade so its a yes from me

Hobbithermit · 23/10/2025 17:19

Chavy is my first and last reaction. There are many far far nicer names
