What kinds of associations do you have with these baby names? For example, when I hear names like John, William, or Charles, I think of well to do businessmen.

Xander
Rory
Wes
Reese
Donovan
Remy
Chase
Christopher
Nico

Xander - too try hard. Prefer Alexander
Rory - Irish, parent a fan of golf
Wes - Streeting
Reese - fine but prefer Reece or Rhys.
Donovan - Jason or the bully in Inbetweeners.
Remy - I know of a boy with this name and he’s lovely, spelt with an i instead of a y.
Chase - awful just no
Christopher - one of the nicest men I’ve ever known, goes by Chris though.
Nico - my dentists name, absolutely lovely but he’s not English, and I’ve never known a British Nico.

Out of all of them I’d go for Reece/Rhys

TheJessops · 20/10/2025 15:23

Xander - Quite like it, will probably grow up to be in the entertainment industry

Rory -Nice, I think it is fairly popular, bit middle of the road but I imagine a cute and wholesome type of fella

Wes - Ugh, isn't there a movie director - Wes Anderson, makes slightly odd films? (might be wrong there) or a bullies name from the 80's/90's

Reese - Witherspoon, spelled like this it's a girls name and is awful. Rhys or even Rees is much better for a boy. Rhys - good strong Welsh name, will probably be a good strong person.

Donovan - Jason, Australian, 1980's, blonde

Remy - A bit 'wet', I'm not sure what this name is or where it came from, or exactly how to pronounce it (that's my ignorance though, but I can't be the only one).

Chase - Chase is on the case! If you are not already a mum you will massively regret this name, assuming paw Patrol is still popular?

Christopher - Very traditional, nothing wrong but nothing great about this name. I do like the mumsnet suggestion of Kit as a nickname for Christopher

Nico - nice, do you have Italian heritage (that's what I would ask)?

Egregiousabsolute · 20/10/2025 15:25

Wes is my dads name and eldest sons middle name. I rate it 👌

TeenLifeMum · 20/10/2025 15:28

I work in healthcare so Wes is Wes Streeting to me - not black, not a geezer 😂

Comeonbabylightmyfire · 20/10/2025 15:38

Xander- Hipster, but cool very posh.
Rory- The racing car. Likely to be naughty.
Wes- Anderson. Another slightly hipster, bit more chilled than Xander.
Reese- Naughty. Parents don’t really give a toss.
Donovan- Singer. Older parents. He wears cords and bores his friends.
Remy- Cool. Likely to go travelling around India to find himself which is how his parents met.
Chase- American. He’s a banker. Bit dull.
Christopher- Robin. Just your average boy next door.
Nico- Italian. He’s romantic although he thinks he’s gods gift.

Wes Streeting is from a very colourful East End family. Both his maternal grandparents did time in jail.

I think he had decent geezer potential when his parents named him.

Just goes to show that your name doesn't necessarily define your future.

AgentPidge · 20/10/2025 15:42

I like Rory and Nico from your list, also Alexander. But I cant pronounce my Rs so Rory would sound like Waw-wy, so maybe not.

yonem · 20/10/2025 15:43

Xander - parents thought Alex was too common but were too scared to go for something too unusual
Rory - middle class Scottish
Wes - Methodist
Reese - American
Donovan - Irish
Remy - flamboyant French hairdresser
Chase - American surfer
Christopher - average middle aged man
Nico - unspecified European

HugoYorway · 20/10/2025 15:43

@AgentPidge , same here.

DiscoBob · 20/10/2025 15:49

Xander- someone posh who thinks they're a rebel and has an arty bright coloured haircut.
Rory- an academic fairly posh quiet type.
Wes- all I can think of is Wes Streeting!
Reese- Working class, works as a PT, likes sport, aged 25-35.
Donovan- Irish, aged around 60, bit of a hippy but also a bit of a misogynist.
Remy- unisex name, for a man probably black, from a city, doing something creative like music or graphic design.
Chase- an American republican, cheesy good looks, hair transplant, works in finance or right wing politics.
Christopher- Mr average, average looks, average job, average personality. Probably quite nice but not very interesting.
Nico- I think of that as a woman's name. Like velvet underground and Nico. So a troubled 60s wild child, beautiful but damned.

Edenmum2 · 20/10/2025 15:51

Half of them sound like politicians and half of them sound like American teenagers

timoteigirl · 20/10/2025 15:57

Xander with Buffy in the library
Rory not my favourite. What if he can't say Rs and his own name
Wes should be Wesley, otherwise the film link
Reese too common, don't like
Donovan Jason
Remy don't think it sounds good
Chase American or Australian
Christopher Robin and winning the pooh. Nico just not very attractive

None on your list are my style

Frankiebaby123 · 20/10/2025 15:59

It brings to mind u need to watch less TV and read more books. Lol

Thedogscollar · 20/10/2025 16:04

Xander - posh version of Alexander
Rory- redheaded Scottish boy.
Wes - cowboys
Reese - Witherspoon female version of DH name.
Remy- Brandy
Donovan- dinner from long ago plus Jason
Chase - American. The bank.
Christopher - Teacher or works in a bank.
Nico - Nn of Nicola in Emmerdale or a young Italian boy.

Thedogscollar · 20/10/2025 16:05

Donovan was a singer not a dinner. I'm tired🤣

ginasevern · 20/10/2025 16:22

Most of them are over used (I mean common), some of them sound chavvy and some are just American gansta. The only one that doesn't fit those descriptions at all is Christopher, which is timeless and lovely.

ginasevern · 20/10/2025 16:24

Thedogscollar · 20/10/2025 16:05

Donovan was a singer not a dinner. I'm tired🤣

Shame. I was going to ask what sort of Donovan dinner you had years ago.

KnickerlessParsons · 20/10/2025 16:26

Xander - short for Alexander, which I like
Rory - quite a nice name
Wes - short for Wesley, which is awful
Reese - Shouldn't it be Rees? Don't like it
Donovan - Hippy vibe
Remy - very too popular
Chase - a game, not a name
Christopher - traditional, nice
Nico - Italian.

Greek! Which would technically make it Niko.

From your list:
Alexander - but there are lots of them
Rory - but I can't say it
Wes
Reese
Donovan
Remy
Chase
Christopher - don't like Kit much
Nicholas

I'm going to be really honest, as an ex teacher, because this is an anonymous forum.

Xander - parents have high aspirations for him

Rory - delightful, hard working

Wes - Danny Dyer character

Reese - never met one who wasn't trouble

Donovan - hippy, but everyone loves him.

Remy - nightmare

Chase - nightmare x 2

Christopher - lovely, traditional and all round good egg

Nico - smokes Benson & Hedges in the toilets at break.

It’s posts like this that make me worry about the IQ of teachers, and the fact that the ones who post like this on the Mn baby names forum seem unable to acknowledge their own ingrained class consciousness.

Calliopespa · 20/10/2025 18:32

Wes, Reese and Donovan are brothers. Wes has a thick beard and might or might not wash frequently but is good at maths which means he has a decent job, Reese has greasy hair, out of work, had a spell in prison and is covered in tattoos and Donovan is a tradesman with a discreet tattoo.

Xander and Nico are brothers. The Birth Certificates, DH, DM and MIL all think of them as Alexander and Nicholas, but Mummy felt that didn't fully express her creative/edgy side (she DID have a spell in jewellery design), so she refers to her son that she intends to be a handsome womaniser as Xander and the one she privately hopes will be gay as Nico.

Christopher is probably quite straightforward these days, having been a very cute little boy who played wonderfully imaginative games with his plush toys in a wood as a child.

Rory's dad or Grandad is Irish and Chase is an American who plays American football.

ETA Oh and I forgot Remy, who is of course French, nearly 80, wears trousers that hang low round his crotch and would fall down entirely were it not for his braces, rolled up sleeves and spends every afternoon sitting smoking or watching slightly younger men playing petanque with other similarly dishevelled old men in berets in a small dusty square with a trickling fountain in a hilltop town in rural France.

myturf · 20/10/2025 18:35

Xander - Buffy/nickname for Alexander
Rory - not much. Popular boy's name where I live
Wes - film directors Anderson and Craven
Reese - Witherspoon
Donovan - just confusion really. Doesn't feel like a first name
Remy- Ratatouille (and I've never even seen it)
Chase - an American boy in a frat
Christopher - sensible
Nico - Rosberg, ex-F1 driver who now presents, or a Greek friend of mine

Of them all, Rory and Nico are my favourites, although I think Nico is hard to pull off if both parents are English without seeming a bit pretentious.
