Would this put you off using a name?

Myself and my husband have fallen in love with the names Alexander for our boy. We’ve been referring to the bump as Alex and it just feels right. It’s worth noting we are both very picky with names and haven’t really found any others that we like.

It suddenly dawned on me the other day that 16 years ago, when I was a silly 18year old, I had a one night stand with a guy named Alex!

Would this rule the name out for you?

No

Why would it? It only just dawned on you, so it's clearly not something you think about much.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 19/10/2025 20:00

No. Wouldn’t even cross my mind.

I have a boy named Alexander - I absolutely love it and he gets so many compliments and I have mums tell
me how great it is to hear a long name and that they loved it, but partners/ family didn't. I know it's easy to say but I do believe all the compliments and really do think people love hearing it! He's a toddler and if anyone tries to shorten it he says "no no no my name Alexander" - I'm so proud. Anyway I know this isn't really what you're asking but it absolutely wouldn't put me
off. He might not even end up with that shortened version. Even if he does, no it wouldn't put me off and vice versa if it was a one night stands of my husbands! If it was a proper ex that makes it different. The name
definitely gets my vote 🙂

I don't think I even know you but no, what you did at 18 would not bother me, as it does not bother me what dear old Doris did with the U.S. troops during the war.

I have an 11 year old Alexander (Alex), we referred to my pregnancy bump with him as ‘The Kid’ (didn’t know he would be a boy) so we think Alex was meant to be and reminds us of the old skool mega drive game Alex The Kid 🤣

Alexander is a really good name that does not age. Both Alex and Xander are great nn.

BaronessBomburst · 19/10/2025 21:03

No, use it! Alexander is a lovely name and we came this close to using it for DS. 😀

Blueuggboots · 19/10/2025 21:05

I have an Alexander, although he’s now Alex and the only person who gets away with calling him his full name is his Grandma!

APatternGrammar · 19/10/2025 21:22

Wouldn’t put me off. But probably don’t share these thoughts as you don’t want to give your husband the ick on a very nice name.

Thank you so much everyone. I think I was holding my breath hoping others would agree that it’s not a big deal! I can’t imagine finding another name we like so much. You’ve all made me feel a lot better 😊
