Baby girl names - thoughts please

My name is very common for my age group, in my school year there were five of us with the same name. I don't really want this for my daughter. She's due in 3 weeks and we are stuck on a name!
Our list changes quite often but these are the names we're considering:
Evelyn
Eliza
Maeve
Hazel
We both like them and they all sound good with our surname, I'm just not sure if any are off-putting. Any thoughts please?

All lovely names. I'd say they have all recently become quite popular names, with the exception of Evelyn which has been popular for a while. Doesn't mean there will be loads in the class, but it might mean it's possible to guess her age fairly accurately in the future. Kind of like Gemmas were probably born in the 80s, Claires in the 70s and Susans in the 60s.

I would say Maeve is most popular on that list, I'm seeing it everywhere at the moment.

We have a Louisa and she has been the only one in the school from 3-16.

I really like Eliza! Don't like Maeve at all really, but maybe that's because it's mixed up with Mavis in my head, which sounds old ladyish to me. (yes I know they're different names with different origins, but they sound so similar).

The age of having four other kids with the same name in your class is long gone. Your choices are all fine. I don’t really understand what you mean by off-putting here?

Evelyn will be Evie and they are everywhere.
Don't like Maeve at all - the spelling or the sound
Hazel is OK - inoffensive.
Not keen on Eliza, but it's OK. I get 'proper little madam' vibes from it.

Maybe it's regional, but I don't know many Gemmas (3). I know countless Clares and Claires, and everywhere I've worked has had several Sues (plus the occasional Soo or Su, or Susan or Suzanne).

They are all within the top 100 girls names in England and Wales last year, but that doesn't mean there would be 5 of the same name in a school year. Hazel is the most uncommon, based on last year's data, out of the four of them. I work with a Hazel, only one I've ever met out in the wild, I think it's a great name

OP I really like all your names, in DD’s nursery there was a maeve and I know an Eliza and an Evie but no Hazels. I like Hazel and Eliza best.

Was a delivery suite midwife for 20 years. Have never once delivered a Hazel. Still work with children, there are no Hazels on my caseload. The other names are gorgeous. Maeve is popular, but I live in NI and the name has deep roots in Irish mythology. Has been in the top 100 names here for as long as I remember. Not sure how popular it is on the mainland. I always liked ‘Margot’ and ‘Blossom’, but they’re rising in popularity too. Good luck with your choices, I loved the baby name discussion when I was pregnant with my own. FYI.. I named one of mine ‘Lauren’ as I rarely came across it in my job. There were 6 other Lauren’s in her year lol 🤷‍♀️

All lovely names. Evelyn is the most likely to have similar names in her class / year (Eve / Evie / Ava / Ivy etc are very popular). I would pick Eliza or Hazel.

I personally dislike names that are nouns and Hazel to me is a colour and a nut.
Eliza, I think of Doolittle.
Evelyn is pretty and feminine and my favourite is Maeve. It is a popular name in Ireland and is the name of an ancient Celtic Queen and symbolises strength and power.

I see this comment on Mumsnet, but it’s really not true! I currently have 5 Ollies in my Year 11 class, and a whole heap of Isabella variants. And 7 year old’s class is full of Amelia B/Amelia M/Amelia J.

Evelyn was my Great Grandma's name. It's beautiful but we had three at the school I worked at last year. Also an Eliza and Maeve. Hazel is a bit bleurgh for me. But it's not a name you hear often. Good Look OP. It's not always easy picking baby names

They're all really lovely names, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them!

Hazel is probably the most "unusual" on your list, but they are all popular names.

None of them are uncommon / all of them are used commonly in the current cohort of under 5s. So no they’re not weird/off putting at all. They’re not 5-in-a-class common but I don’t think they’re as out there as you’re imagining!

My godmother is called Hazel and she's absolutely wonderful and totally eccentric even in her 80s! She even went and married a Mr Brown. Out of your choices Hazel and Eliza are my favourite. Dd2 was going to call her first dc Evelyn if it was a girl but she had a boy. She's now expecting a girl and it's too popular now.

I think Hazel is quite timeless and like that best from your list, but the others are ok too.

I agree with @RainySeattle . Name variation tends to be regional.
You could have just one Oliver in a class but 3 Ezras.

Hazel is lovely.

A bit witchy/ autumnal/ natural whilst also being pretty.

And I like the Z sound in it.

Evelyn and Eliza are nice. No reason why an Evelyn has to be "Evie", could be "Lyn" or "Lynnie" if you want a diminutive.

Not fond of Maeve or Hazel. I prefer Maude to Maeve.

If you don’t want a common name I’d steer clear of Evelyn. I work in a primary schools and we have several Evelyn’s and Evie’s.
The others are great though. I like Hazel. No issues with spelling or pronunciation but she will almost certainly be the only Hazel

They are all popular for this age group. I don’t think that’s a bad thing; they are all nice (not massively keen on Maeve but that’s just personal taste) but definitely mid 2020 names.

Hazel is one to watch as in some accents it sounds awful (‘ay-zull’) I do like the name though.
