I know the name is popular but this is our top contender due to sentimental meaning. Is the name really awful? How many do you know?

I like it, I know just one and he's a lovely little boy so he influences my opinion of the name.

Luxio · 09/10/2025 20:00

Use it if you like it and it's not a horrible name at all. However honestly it is everywhere and I've taught so many of them in the past few years that I couldn't even begin to list how many.

HS1990 · 09/10/2025 20:02

I know a little lad in my sons class called Albie, if you're interested in something similar ... ?

Cardomomle · 09/10/2025 20:02

Use it if you like it, I've taught loads, seriously - it's very popular. However, that may not matter to you, so if that's your choice, that's fine.

Albie is really popular to so might aswell use Archie

Plastictreees · 09/10/2025 20:03

It’s not awful. If you like it, go with it! I know more Albie’s than Archie’s. And I loathe the name Albie!

Yousuns · 09/10/2025 20:04

It's absolutely fine 🙂

Strange, this is the first Albie I have met....

Cardomomle · 09/10/2025 20:05

Oh my goodness, so many boys called Albie! It hasn't overtaken Archie yet where I teach, but it won't be long!

SpringingOn · 09/10/2025 20:09

I know 3. All very nice boys.

ShesTheAlbatross · 09/10/2025 20:17

Any name you post on MN (or anywhere) will have people who like it and people who don’t.
Personally, I don’t like Archie at all. But who cares! You may hate my children’s names.

The only objective thing you can look at is how popular it is. But only you can say how much that matters to you.

Winebefore5 · 09/10/2025 20:24

Archie was the 10th most popular name last year…which is 228 kids named Archie in England and Wales in 2024. 228 Archie’s out of roughly 302,000 baby boys born in 2024.

in the grand scheme of things, that’s f*ck all isn’t it?

Also, Archie is great name. Love it.

2500 rather than 200 though!

Oops. Looks like got the number from the Scottish list. But following the same logic that would be less than 1% of boys in Scotland were called Archie last year, assuming a roughly 50% split of boys/ girl birth rate.

I dislike the dissonant sound - Archie sounds like finger nails on a blackboard sort of screechy.
So many much nicer names out there.

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/10/2025 22:13

I like it and I wouldn’t worry about popularity too much - my son has a top 5 name and is the only one in his year at secondary school. Popular names aren’t as overused as they used to be and you see so many name regret threads on here that I think it’s definitely best to use the name you genuinely love rather than regret it later on.

I agree that popular names aren’t as overused as they used to be at all. My DS has a name that was in the top 20 in the year he was born. He was the only one in his year at Primary, only one in his classes at High School, only one in 6th Form and only one in his friendship group at Uni.

If you like a name i would use it but ask your MW if she thinks it’s popular as names can be very regional.

GetToHeaven · 09/10/2025 22:53

I know a few. I’ve never particularly liked it but it’s not awful

It does have a screechy sound (especially when shrieked across a playground/supermarket), and also for me not great connotations. I think of the slightly negative uses of things like arch-enemy and also people being arch or slightly twatty, arch reply etc. To be honest, a good number of the Archies I have known have suited a name with those meanings.

BUT if it has meaning for you, that's always a good reason to use a name, and I've just been on a thread with the suggestion of Beau-Lilah as a name so I'm not about to get worked up over Archie.

spiderlight · 09/10/2025 23:36

I love Archie. We had an incredible dog called Archie, named about 20 years ago before it was trendy, so it will always be a positive association for me.

user1492757084 · 10/10/2025 05:20

I prefer Archibald.
Archie is fine though.

Garamousalata · 10/10/2025 05:22

I know several and they are all dogs.

wizzler · 10/10/2025 06:05

I love it. Only know one and he is lovely
