Middle Name Ideas

As per username, I’m looking for middle name ideas for a boy, with ideally the following two ‘rules’:

  • short, one or two syllables
  • beginning with a consonant

First name and surname are both 9 letters/3 syllables long. Both start with a consonant, hence the ‘no vowel’ - it’s too easy for it to make a word/near word!

I like James, but we have it within extended family as a first and a middle name already. Same with Noah.

So far I’ve got on the list:

Beau
Heath
Jude
Quinn

I thought of Tadhg - there is Irish heritage, it’s not completely out of the blue - but figured he would have to explain how to pronounce it given we live in England.

Any ideas gratefully received. 🙂

Use Tadhg, he won’t commonly have to explain the pronunciation of a middle name and it won’t affect him the same way it would for a first name.

Can you share the first name? Wouldn’t be outing as this is a username for this specific question Smile

Ryan
John
David
George
Max

All go nicely with the 9-letter/3-syllable names that spring to mind (and I can only think of four!)

James and Noah are a little different to the other names you’ve listed. I personally prefer more traditional names or names with meaning, so much prefer James, Noah or Tadhg. I have to admit I don’t have a clue how to pronounce Tadhg, but it’s so rare you ever have to use a middle name and I think if it’s your favourite, go for it!

Can you use dad or grandad's name? I love family names as a middle name.

Why not just miss out on having a middle name? They’re kind of irrelevant unless you’re honouring someone and if you don’t have anything in mind why does he need one? Any family names you can use?

MiddleNameHelpPlease · 30/09/2025 21:00

Thank you all for lots of ideas to think about!

There are a few of the suggestions already within the family, and unfortunately family names I would have liked to choose all start with vowels 🤦🏻‍♀️, but there’s definitely a lot to be thinking about - certainly more than I had managed to come up with!
