Ingrid, Svea or Sigrid (Swedish/ American parents)

Our DD was born two days ago and we're still dithering about her name! Need to register it soon so would really appreciate your thoughts.

I'm Swedish, DH is American. We're in Sweden at the moment but likely moving back to the UK (or maybe US) in the next couple years. We want something that "sounds Swedish" to preserve that cultural identity, but equally don't want to make her life unnecessarily difficult!
DS is Magnus (almost 2) which we're very happy with. Our surname is a common Anglo one beginning with R - think Robinson, Richards etc. Stellan would have been our choice for another boy.

Our shortlist:
Ingrid - Ticks all the boxes and probably in the lead. But DH has a lingering concern that sounds harsh or ugly in English with the hard G? Is he imagining that?
Svea - Sounds cool ("SVAY-ah"). But too difficult/exotic in English? Minor concerns it sounds kind of "right wing" in Sweden (means Sweden, sort of), but I think the Anglo surname saves it.
Sigrid - Perhaps a bit smoother than Ingrid but also less recognisable. Friend knew a Sigrid who ended up nicknamed "Cigarette" though
Still somewhat considering:

• Liv - "Leev" in Swedish. Would have to decide whether to correct people or give in to the short I in English
• Lena - ("Layna") Less evidently Swedish but easy everywhere and has family significance
• Linnea - Works well; we just can't get excited about it for some reason
• Saga - I love it in Swedish but DH says too weird in English

We've already vetoed Astrid and Freja, and looked through just about every Swedish name going!

Which would you choose? Any experience with these names in the UK? Would love your input, good or bad!

Ingrid. I like Svea too but there would be frequent mispronunciations.

I love Saga (pronounced Saaga?) and Svea is also beautiful.

We were in a similar position and had got down to Freja (DH’s favourite) and Hanna (my favourite). DH has a female family member called Sanna which I also like. As it happens we had a boy

I really like Svea, used to work with one who was lovely and never heard any issues with pronunciation. Ingrid and Sigrid seem too harsh sounding.

I like Ingrid. I also like Solveig which I know isn’t on your list.

liv is lovely but would be pronounced Liv not Leev. I like Lena a lot too

I don't see Ingrid as any harsher than Sigrid tbh.

I really like Astrid but see you have ruled that out.

There was a thread the other day about Saga and in all honesty I agree with your DH: it isn't ideal in English. A saga usually connotes a complicated and somewhat boring story ( or at least long) and isn't normally used in a positive way.

I am familiar with both cultures. Magnus works quite well.

Ingrid is pretty, none of the others work in an English speaking context.

Svea - not pronounceable in English, also could read as sweat

Sigrid - too Germanic sounding, I really wouldn't go there. There are Nazi jokes galore don't do this to your child.

Liv - Everyone will say Live

Lena - Will be pronounced Leena

Linnea - Very confusing for Brits and Americans, it simply isn't a sound that's natural here.

Saga - Sounds not too nice when pronounce with a British or American accent.

Brita - brighter

Maja - major - better to use Maya spelling
Ida - could work but will be usually be pronounced Eye-duh
Annika - very nice and would work well. nice nickname too.

Svea is definitely the nicest. It's obvious to me how you pronounce it, but even if people get it wrong they won't mind being corrected unless they're really unreasonable. Think of it as a twat filter!

Ingrid - like it. (Bergman)
Svea - no. Will be Svee-uh. Not keen on the meaning
Sigrid - it's ok. Makes me think of Siegfried.
Liv - will be Liv not Leev.
Lena - OK but Leena/Layna/Lenna?
Linnea - sounds familiar. Own brand bedding?
Saga - long winded tale/linked with retirement age

I love the sound of Svea, if you don’t mind possible difficulties with spelling / pronunciation in the UK.

I voted for Ingrid though as I think it would be the easiest of your choices to spell / pronounce in the UK and is a nice name.

I'm not keen on Ingrid. Probably because I remember the older generation Ingrid's and find it a bit harsh sounding. I prefer Svea, Lena or Sigrid. They're quite cool.

I know other families who've crossed this cultural divide. The kids are now all adults named:

Helena (adult involved gets a fairly accurate swedish pronunciation from people who know them well. Altho' I've been corrected for mispronouncing it when I used the correct Swedish pronounciation by other English speakers.

Of the names you've listed I really like Svea. I also think people would learn how to pronounce it. I'm not a big Ingrid/ Sigrid fan.

I also like Siv although having googled it the meaning (bride/ wife) isn't great.

Also, Magnus is great and I completely love Stellan.

I had some Swedish friends once and they were Ada and Malin. Nice names too.

Sigrid is gorgeous. Possibly will have more awareness amongst younger people thanks to the singer. I think it’s very cool and fresh sounding. Easy for the native English speaker to pronounce too.

Solveig is going to be impossible for anyone outside of Norway / Sweden to pronounce correctly (or spell).

I love Sigrid. Magnus and Sigrid sounds great.

I always loved Inga too.

I absolutely love Sigrid so so this would be my favourite.

I don't find Ingrid harsh; I really like it too.

I think Svea would be fine but I don't know that it particularly works in English.
