Struggling to name our baby girl

I’ve name changed because the details are outing.

The two names I love are Maeve and Daisy. However, DH is called Dave and I have a baby niece named Darcy.

I can’t find any other names that I really gel with, grateful for any ideas.

@Needmorelego it's May-ve not Mee-ve

Ooops.
Apologies again to all the Maeve's out there for getting your name wrong for my entire life 😬

I've always thought Maeve was pronounced "Meeve".
Is it not?
I don't think I have actually known someone with the name so only ever seen it written.
Apologies to any Maeve's out there if I have always got it wrong.

It’s pronounced Mave. The name became more well known as Maeve was one of the main characters in Sex Education.

So yes....
Dave and Maeve.
Maybe not the best 🙂

PanderBare · 24/09/2025 15:11

@Needmorelego ,i'm take it you are not from the UK or the Republic of Ireland. Maeve rhymes with Dave. It's like May with a v on the end.

As I said I've only ever seen it written down. I've never known anyone with the name.
I now know so if I meet a real life Maeve I won't be embarrassing myself 🙂
(as a child when I read Enid Blyton's Malory Towers I thought Alicia was pronounced "Al-eh-ca" as I didn't know any real life Alicia's)

PanderBare · 24/09/2025 15:38

Just look up the names by entering 'Maeve pronunciation' or 'Alicia pronunciation'.

I don't know how you got Al-eh-ca from Alicia, because the ci would be 'ssi' or 'sh'. In English, an E, I or Y after a C usually changes the sound to a SS sound.
The 'eh' doesn't make much sense.

I was confused by Alicia and Patricia. (Why don't they rhyme?) The internet wasn't around when I was reading Enid Blyton.

Needmorelego · 24/09/2025 16:22

@PanderBare it was 40 odd years ago that I didn't know how to pronounce Alicia.
I am in a Enid Blyton fan group on Facebook and apparently I'm not the only one who didn't know the correct way to say it.
It's a rather fancy name for the Enid era. I wonder if she knew one in real life.

PanderBare · 24/09/2025 16:44

@Needmorelego ,There are at least two ways of saying it. Al-iss-y-a or Aleesha.
Many of her character's names were unusual. Darrell for a start, and Wilhelmina in a book written just after the war.

I still can't see why you thought it was Al-eh-ca, I thought you might not have English as a first language.

Maeve is from an irish name and is an anglicisation. Ae is usually 'ay', but there are exceptions like paean.

Needmorelego · 24/09/2025 16:51

@PanderBare English native born and bred 😂
Who knows where I got that pronunciation from. Were we taught to read with phonics back in the early 80s ?? I can't remember.
Darrell was weird for a girl - that was Enid's husbands name.
Wilhelmina was so she could have that "I want to be called a boys name" character of Bill.
(I remember a character in Sweet Valley Twins that was Billie but it was short for Belinda)

Butterflybum · 24/09/2025 16:56

Dave and Maeve would make me smile.

Daisy is nice and fine with Darcy (it’s not like it’s siblings).

PanderBare · 24/09/2025 18:00

Oh right. I remember thinking that she seemed to have deliberately looked for a girl's name to make a boy's name from it ('try-hard' Smile). I knew a Georgina but she was always Gina. EB's name puzzled me and I had no idea it was Ee-nid Bligh-tun until someone said it.

We didn't do phonics, and I learnt pronunciation from the dictionary. I used to get laughed at by other children for getting words wrong so I used to suss out the IPA from words I already knew.

KayEmAy · 24/09/2025 19:59

I like Maeve but I LOVE Daisy :)

SallySummerPop · 25/09/2025 19:25

How about Maeva?
