Hello all,

DH and I are keen gardeners and currently expecting DC1 (sex as yet unknown).

I am very keen on plant names and honestly am struggling to balance a name I love with a plant I love (for example I adore Rhododendrons as plants but wouldn't wan't to saddle a child with that as a name, whereas Poppy and Daisy are very cute names from a baby but don't particularly meet my horticultural tastes.) I am looking for people's immediate, extremely judgemental and biased opinions on what they would think of a girl named 1. Ivy 2. Ivy-Rose 3. Dahlia 4. Violet 5. Violet-Rose 6. Azalea 7. Amaranth.

Suggestions for boys names other than Ash very welcome.

I don't love hyphenated names anyway, but if you are planning to have more botanically-named children in the future, you probably shouldn't use up two plants in one go. Otherwise they're all fine except Amaranth and I don't think I'd like to be called Azalea either. Iris is quite popular?

Mumsnet loves Rowan for a boy.

CrackingOn50 · 16/09/2025 12:29

But, more sensibly:

Leander
Rowan
Primrose

Harrysmummy246 · 16/09/2025 12:30

Rowan for either sex
Willow
Fern

Honestly, no to Amaranth. JUST NO. Not overly keen on Azalea either but that might be my horticultural preferences showing through...
Might be worth looking at Botanical rather than common names

ItsFineReally · 16/09/2025 12:31

Rowan
Basil
Heath

Personally, not a fan of hyphenated names so 3, 4, 1, 6 in order of preference for your girl names.

Lafufufu · 16/09/2025 12:31

Iris is a fave of mine

Smartiepants79 · 16/09/2025 12:34

Pansy
lavender
fern
elder
willow
olive
holly

I don’t like dahlia, azalea or amaranth myself.

Daccey · 16/09/2025 12:36

How about Rhodes? As a nod to your fav plant?

I really dislike Ivy (and Ivy Rose is even worse cos of the hyphen and just feels too over done in terms of style)
Dahlia I actually love. Violet is a perfectly nice name. Azalea isn’t exactly beautiful as it’s a bit harsh but it does have an interesting ring to it and definitely passes as a name.
Amaranth is a big no I think.

other options (mix of boys and girls)

Fern
Alder
Aspen
Briar
Blossom
Clover

I also love Tansy!

MrsBeltane · 16/09/2025 12:36

Sorrel
Leif
Berrigan, nn Berry

muddyford · 16/09/2025 12:37

Rhoda?
Dahlia, Amaranth and Azalea would not be choices I would make, ditto doubling up.
Camellia or Magnolia? Tilia is the genus of lime trees.
Birch or Oaky for a boy, Acer, Circe.

Willow

Rowan

Aspen
Oren
Leif

UneasyMe · 16/09/2025 12:44

Whateverwillwedonow · 16/09/2025 12:44

Aster or Basil for a boy? Or Joshua (tree) or (sweet) William.

I dislike hyphenated names but from your list I like Voilet, Dahlia, Ivy and Rose.

Agree with PP re Primrose. I also like Flora and Clover.

Trushy · 16/09/2025 12:51

Just went round my garden in my head and these could be names, some more out there than others

Hebe for a girl

Sunflower3000 · 16/09/2025 13:03

There’s a girl called Dahlia (age 5) in my son’s class - I’d never have considered it but think it’s lovely now

exercises24 · 16/09/2025 12:39

Proteus

Catalpa bignonoides Aurea

😂

PossumHollow · 16/09/2025 13:07

I really like Violet and I actually could come round to Azalea but not really any of the others - I do like Ivy but I think it is fairly well used, and that puts me off. I think Rose by itself is nicer though I guess also fairly commonly used. Double barrelled first names are not for me at all.

Otherwise I like -

Lavender
Rosemary
Primrose
Rosalie
Hyacinth
Clover
Hazel
Olive
Fern
Zinnia
Flora
Marigold (I guess maybe unfortunately associated with the rubber gloves though!)
Juniper
Clementine
Laurel (for either)
Sage (for either)

Rowan
Heath
Basil
Florian
Linden
Oakley
Aster
Herb

Boys names are harder if you want garden plants rather than trees! But there’s so many nice ones.
