Hello all,

DH and I are keen gardeners and currently expecting DC1 (sex as yet unknown).

I am very keen on plant names and honestly am struggling to balance a name I love with a plant I love (for example I adore Rhododendrons as plants but wouldn't wan't to saddle a child with that as a name, whereas Poppy and Daisy are very cute names from a baby but don't particularly meet my horticultural tastes.) I am looking for people's immediate, extremely judgemental and biased opinions on what they would think of a girl named 1. Ivy 2. Ivy-Rose 3. Dahlia 4. Violet 5. Violet-Rose 6. Azalea 7. Amaranth.

Suggestions for boys names other than Ash very welcome.

I quite like Amaranth.

What about
Briar Rose
Virginia
Peony

I came to say Peony too.

I've not met a Peony, but it's not dissimilar to Penny and I think it has more gravitas than Poppy.

Ivy & Ivy-Rose - I don't know why but I hate the name Ivy, makes me think of a miserable mean old lady. Ivy-Rose is a bit nicer, I like hyphenated first names. Poison Ivy too.

Dahlia - I reallly love this, gorgeous plant, all the varieties. Would you pronounce it Dar or Day?

Violet & Violet-Rose - Like Ivy, I hate Violet, though it seems very trendy right now. Violet reminds me of a really awful nasty bully from a book written in the 70's or something, no idea why, just think it's horrible.

Azalea - I like it, interesting nice sound, doesn't conjure up anything horrible for me!

Amaranth - bit odd, I don't know this plant, bit clunky sounding, looks masculine to me. might get shortened to Amy or Ammy.

Can I suggest - Zinnia, Marigold, Aster, Clementine.

Boys is tricky, personally I'm not a fan of flowery names for boys like Rowan etc. There are bird names like Robin or Wren but personally I don't like them either, they feel a bit 'wet' for a boy. Monty is a good one though, or Don?!

Have you come to any decision? Good luck and congratulations!

Doug

Always wanted Acer for a boy but Mumsnet said it was ridiculous 😆 please do it op, they’re my fave.

Meadow?

Eden

I do really like Dahlia, and they are so beautiful

I am also obsessed with plants

I agree with Rowan, for either. Beautiful trees, symbols of protection and a happy home
Rosemary - fragrant and hardy
Aster - gorgeous and vibrant. Mythological meaning of innocence and justice
Lilac - symbolism for new beginnings
Robin - not a flower name (although you could plant a red robin bush for him), every Gardner's feathery friend
Cassia - warmth and elegance
Reed - strong and resilient plants that bend, but don't break, in the wind
More loosely relating to trees and greenery, but fabulous names all, Roscoe, Moss, Silas and Denver

Planter
Digger

Trying to think outside the box;

Erin - the Latin for Hedgehog is Erinaceous

Briony
Agapanthus - shorten to Agatha/Agnes

Boys - Austin and William

I have to admit I love Azalea

😂Monty Don!
I think the Violet you are thinking of is in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Dahl!).

I love Violet though.

Calliopespa · 25/09/2025 15:26

Capability Brown!

Or Andre after Andre Le Notre?

Ahhh, is that where I get my feelings for Violet from?! Thank you. People seem to love it right now though, so I think I'm in a minority these days!

I'm not suggesting Monty-Don as such, rather Monty or Don! 😃

There's also Adam perhaps - the first man in the first 'garden' if the OP is religiously inclined. And Adam Frost is Monty Don's stand in?!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 25/09/2025 16:03

Azalea is one of my guilty pleasure names. I love Zalie as a nickname.

Monvelo · 25/09/2025 16:11

I like pp suggestion of Eden for a girl! DD is strangely obsessed with naming her imaginary children and suggests, Ivy, Iris, Marigold, Olive, Hazel, Rose, Daisy, Peony, Tansy, Blossom, Fern, Willow, Rowan, Robin.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 25/09/2025 22:06

Amaranth is gorgeous. From your list I'd choose that with Violet for a middle name.

One of my favourite girls' names is Hortensia, which means 'of the garden'. I can just imagine the comments about its being too long, but I love it.

Dear God not Peony!!

How to sign someone up for a lifetime of penis jokes! Pe-o-nys jokes, I mean.

Oh yes, that's true! I hadn't thought down that path.

ETA I was wondering why it wasn't more popular, as thinking from the flower angle, its rather cute! Goes to show the value of name threads.

greglet · 26/09/2025 09:19

Violet and Ivy are nice. Dahlia is okay.

(Herb) Robert for a boy.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 26/09/2025 22:22
